Clean acrylic glass professionally

For many products, the longevity in many areas only comes with the right care. The cleaning of acrylic glass is also not very difficult. Below you will find detailed information on cleaning acrylic glass.

Acrylic is tough, but not so hard

The technical name for acrylic glass is polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA for short. For a plastic, the surface of acrylic glass is unrivaled hard. However, there are, of course, quite a few other substances your acrylic can come in contact with:

  • water
  • Dust and dirt particles
  • sand particles
  • Soil (windbreak on the terrace, for example)

Preclean acrylic glass

Many of the materials adhere extremely firmly to the acrylic glass. In particular, if you want to clean an external acrylic glass surface with a cloth, you can quickly work in fine scratches into the material. Therefore, you should first rinse such vulnerable areas with clean water. Either with the garden hose or a properly used high-pressure cleaner. You may be able to use a very soft brush (similar to car wash brushes).

Use a microfiber cloth

If you have been able to pre-clean the acrylic surface, you can now begin with the actual cleaning. A conventional paper towel from a kitchen roll is not recommended. This too can be too rough. Instead, you can use a microfiber cloth. Eyewear cleaning glasses also work, since eyeglass lenses are often made of acrylic glass (sports glasses).

Household cleaner and acetic acid or Essigessenz

Commercially available household glass cleaner can then be used as a cleaning agent. Even better, however, is a mixture of acetic acid or vinegar essence and water. Consider the properties of acrylic glass: PMMA is resistant to acids. After the pre-cleaning, spray the acrylic surface vigorously with an acetic acid-water mixture and let it act for half an hour or more. Simply fill the detergent with a spray bottle.

Algae can be removed as well

After the exposure time, simply wipe the acrylic surface with your microfibre cloth. You can also remove fingerprints and the like. In addition, fixed algae dissolve. However, you must then leave the Essigessenz water mixture for significantly longer. Use clear vinegar essence as it is odorless.

Permanently protect acrylic glass with an impregnation

In addition, it is recommended that you work on external acrylic surfaces with a suitable sealer. Preferably you should also fall back here on a nano-technology product. But make sure it's a real nano product. Do you want to save this work, at least for the first time, you can also purchase before the installation of your acrylic materials, which is already impregnated accordingly.

Tips & Tricks

Boreholes often look milky and unpleasantly cloudy in acrylic glass bodies. To change that, there's a little trick as well: Pick up some oil with a cotton swab and then grease the hole. You will immediately see that the surface of the hole is now crystal clear again.

If it comes to small scratches by cleaning, you can polish scratches from the acrylic glass. The specialist trade offers different polishes, but also toothpaste is suitable.
