Advantages and disadvantages of steel fiber reinforced concrete

Steel fiber reinforced concrete is considered a modern and future-oriented building material, which is already often used today as an alternative to conventional reinforced concrete. Steel fiber concrete properties

Steel fiber reinforced concrete is regarded as a forward-looking building material, even though it has not yet received a general building inspectorate approval. However, directives have already been passed by the German Concrete Association and the Steel Fiber Concrete Committee, and with individual approval from the Supreme Building Inspectorate, the building material can be used in many areas.

The addition of steel fibers in different amounts can positively change the properties of concrete. Steel fiber concrete is in many ways far superior to concrete. The decisive factors are:

  • the shape of the steel fibers
  • the amount of steel fibers per m³ (dosage)
  • the carrying capacity of the steel fibers, it can be different from fiber to fiber

Advantages of steel fiber concrete

In some aspects, steel fiber reinforced concrete can prove to be much more efficient than concrete of the same quality. Specifically, these are:

Physical Properties

The ductility, the resistance to tensile loads and the possible pressure load is higher. Steel fiber concrete is thus much better suited to withstand bending loads. This plays a role in construction, for example, when it comes to the coverage of wall openings (doors, windows).

At the same time, the tear resistance is higher. This means that even if a crack occurs in the concrete, the steel fiber concrete takes less damage than conventional concrete mixtures.

Avoidance of shrinkage cracks

When curing, concrete usually shrinks. In conventional concrete, this can lead to so-called shrinkage cracks, which is why so-called shrinkage alleys are often created. In fiber-based concrete there are usually no shrinkage cracks.

In reinforced concrete, the corrosion of steel inside creates high physical forces that can weaken concrete due to the effect of carbonation. Due to the small size of the steel fibers in steel fiber reinforced concrete, only small forces are produced when carbonation should occur. The concrete is not damaged by this.


The economy is higher with steel fiber reinforced concrete, as it can be installed in a single operation by the pump or through a pipe. No reinforcement is necessary, and it is not necessary to pay attention to the necessary reinforcement overlay. Moreover, steel fiber concrete does not have to be compacted.

Possible disadvantages

The disadvantage can have the effect that it is currently very expensive to dimension components made of steel fiber reinforced concrete. It is also not possible to use all types of steel fibers, but only those in which there are values ​​for the structural behavior associated with concrete.

On many soils, protruding steel fibers from the soil surface can be problematic because it can damage equipment or vehicles or cause injury.
