Alkaline water - what is it and how does it work?

Alkaline or alkaline water is often advertised as the ultimate health-promoting drug that can cure many ailments and restore damaged health. Whether this is actually tenable, which facts speak against it, and why it may even be harmful to health, is explained here.

Water as acid or base

The pH of water can have a very wide range. In the Drinking Water Ordinance alone, pH values ​​between 6.5 and 9.5 are permissible.

The cause of the often different pH of water is due to its different and varying degrees of mineralization.

Water completely free of minerals, such as rainwater or distilled water has a pH of 5, so it is an acid. It also acts accordingly aggressive.

Water, which contains a great deal of minerals, has a much higher pH - some types of medicinal water have such high mineralization that they often exceed a pH of 9.

However, water is always a weakly buffered acid or base - meaning its pH can fluctuate quickly if other acids or alkalis are present in the environment.

The fairytale of hyperacidity

Hyperacidity is the root of all evil for many alternative practitioners. Headache, joint problems, rheumatism, tiredness, irritability, hyperactivity, constant tiredness, overstraining, mood swings - all this is due to "hyperacidity". The hyperacidity comes from stress and poor nutrition.

The fact is that if there is little fresh fruit and vegetables eaten, and there is a mineral deficiency, metabolic products with extreme pH can be buffered worse.

As a result, sleep deprivation, stress, high levels of caffeine or nicotine consumption, and a hectic lifestyle can lead to more acidic metabolites that the body is less likely to dispose of. This is not solved by drinking alkaline water, but only by remedying the causes.

Alkaline water enters the stomach, where it meets stomach acid (pH value of 1 to 1.5) and dilutes it. This leads to the formation of more stomach acid, with known consequences: belching, heartburn, bloating of the abdomen, indigestion, nausea.

Tips & Tricks

Already sufficient drinking and a balanced, mineral-rich diet and sufficient sleep solve the problem completely. Expensive, chemically modified water is not necessary.
