The choice of suitable files for aluminum

Aluminum is a relatively soft light metal. However, there may be differences depending on the alloy. Nevertheless, the right choice of files must be made for filing aluminum. In the following files, we write exclusively about workshop files, ie filing tools, with which you manually remove material from the workpiece.

Basic properties of files

Files are available in many different forms, from straight to curved. However, this is more crucial for the desired sanding pattern. Whether a file is suitable for filing aluminum depends on other properties. The teeth of a file are cut, milled or carved.

Different workshop files

The resulting indentations, which highlight the teeth, are referred to as strokes. The strokes can be different:

  • Einhiebfeilen
  • Double Slash Files
  • Double-cut files

The Einhiebfeile requires only a small pressure. With such files mainly knives or saw teeth are ground. The cross-cut file consists of cross-hewed blows - first the undercut, then the top blow. With Kreuzhiebfeilen can take off a lot of chip material from the workpiece. It is also used for coarser filing.

When filing is also distinguished by how coarse or fine the effect is:

The right number of slices for filing aluminum

The number of slices tells you how fine a file is. Basically, the harder the material to be filed, the finer the cut should be. In the reverse order, therefore, a less fine cut is required for filing aluminum. First, the coarser filing of materials such as aluminum, copper or brass with a coarse file, the fine work done with a fine toothing.

The correct handling of the file

Basically, a swinging handling when filing is to be avoided in any case. Almost automatically, a person tends to perform a bottom-up file, in particular, the longer the file is filed and filed back in a file direction.

With the shortest possible passes therefore there is a lower risk of swinging. If the file is swung during the filing process, no straight or flat surface can be filed. Rather, exactly the rounding of the swing on the workpiece is distinguished.

Prevent the bonding of the chipboard with a trick

In addition to avoid accumulating and sticking too much chipboard material to the file, you can use a trick. To do this, grind the file before filing the aluminum with an ordinary chalk. In addition, you do not file aluminum with maximum pressure on the workpiece. If the file sticks too much, you must use a file with a coarser cut.
