Glue aluminum onto wood

Aluminum has fundamentally different properties compared to wood. Nevertheless, it can happen that both materials have to be glued together. Below we have put together different ways to glue aluminum on wood.

The different properties of wood and aluminum

Wood and aluminum are completely different materials with equally different properties. Therefore, first the most important differences of both materials:

  • Wood: organic
  • Wood absorbs moisture and releases it again
  • UV radiation destroys the lignin in the wood
  • Alu is a metal
  • Aluminum begins to oxidize "on the air" immediately on the surface
  • Alu has a relatively large thermal expansion compared to other metals

Suitable glue to glue aluminum on wood

If you now want to glue aluminum to wood, these are precisely the characteristics that must be considered. Depending on the size of the surfaces to be bonded, different adhesives can be used:

  • Silicone-based adhesive
  • Adhesive based on PU or PUR
  • Glue based on epoxy resins

Small or large surfaces Bond alu to wood

For smaller glued joints (for example aluminum handles on wood), adhesives with PU or PUR suitable for aluminum are the optimal choice. On the other hand, if both materials are to be glued over a large area, epoxy adhesives are the better choice.

The problem is initially the fact that forms an oxidation layer on an aluminum surface in the air immediately after processing. However, this significantly affects the adhesive strength of the adhesive used. Therefore, the following procedure is recommended for large-area bonding of aluminum on wood.

Step-by-step instructions for large-scale bonding of aluminum to wood

  • Wood
  • aluminum
  • Glue (epoxy resin)
  • Grease and silicone cleaner
  • Sandpaper in different grain sizes
  • Spatula for spreading the glue
  • Presses or screw clamps

1. Sand and degrease the aluminum

First, the aluminum must be roughened. When grinding the grease is already removed. Especially if you still have to touch the aluminum with your bare hands, it is recommended to clean the surface afterwards with a grease and silicone cleaner.

2. Apply adhesive to aluminum and prepare

For example, in high-tech areas such as aviation, aluminum bonding with epoxy resin is common. But there are possibilities to glue the material under exclusion of air (vacuum). Of course, a home improvement does not have these options.

Therefore, you have to resort to a trick here. They apply the epoxy resin to the aluminum surface to be bonded. Then start sanding the surface with a suitable sandpaper. The fact that the surface is covered by the resin, no oxygen can reach it and use the oxidation.

3. Stick the aluminum on the wood

Now the likewise prepared wood can be glued and tightened on the aluminum surface. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Tips & Tricks

If you want to glue aluminum to wood on both sides, for example an aluminum sheet with aluminum panels to reinforce them, the aluminum is not visible. Therefore, you can drill numerous holes in the aluminum and so virtually glue both wood panels through the aluminum.

In the house journal we offer you different articles for the processing and processing of aluminum. For example, we show you how to solder aluminum sheet. With the comprehensive search function you can find many more guides and manuals for aluminum and aluminum.
