Build a pharmacy cabinet yourself: pharmacy

A generous pharmacy cabinet must not be missing in a well-stocked household. Especially in the transitional period, a cold affects almost everyone. Especially children are constantly struck during these seasons. With fever suppositories, cough syrup & Co. an ordinary first aid kit bursts quickly at the seams.

When dealing with medication, it is important to have everything well sorted and quickly at hand. Finding a piece of furniture that meets all these requirements can be not only difficult, but also very expensive. Why not build a pharmacy cabinet yourself then? For this purpose, the material wood is particularly well suited. Straight beech wood has a very noble look and is easy to work for beginners. Furthermore, it is available in every hardware store around the corner.

Whether as a gift or for your own family, who would not be pleased about a beautiful self-made wooden pharmacist cabinet? The effort for such a piece of furniture is worthwhile, since it offers optimal and versatile storage options. The height of the drawers is designed so that the classic Globuli vials fit exactly. For related literature and larger things like e.g. Thermometer is just enough space. If you have been "infected" now, I wish them much success and fun with the replicas!

Material and tool list

Needed tools:

  • Circular saw with guide rail or table saw
  • chop saw
  • Cordless Screwdriver
  • Router or router table
  • jigsaw
  • Flat dowel bur (optional)
  • Flat dowels (here also round dowels or screws can be used alternatively)
  • Orbital sander (240 grit)
  • wood glue
  • wood oil

In addition to the fun of furniture making, the cost factor also plays a major role. Finally, the built furniture should not be much more expensive than a ready-made variant. However, it should not be forgotten that this is a request made of wood and not chipboard.

Drawings and dimensions

First, the items are cut to the specified dimensions. An exact and effective cutting plan can be found in the corresponding drawings. All parts are numbered or labeled to ensure a good overview. It can be sawn with a cross-cut and pull saw or table saw. If sawn with a circular or jigsaw, always work with a suitable guide rail.

TIP: Check the boards at the hardware store for damage or bends!

Step 1: Sawing the items

For this project you have to cut some parts to the same dimensions. Instead of re-measuring each time, simply place an already sawn piece on the board to be sawn as a template. Align it with the saw blade and you have an exact copy!

TIP: Always use the same board as a template to avoid deviations!

The individual parts of the drawers are cut to size on the table saw. Set up a stop to be able to saw precisely and at an angle.

Then number the individual parts for the body according to the technical drawing.

TIP: Draw the markings on the front sides of the boards. As a result, no annoying pencil marks on visible areas, which later have to be ground away or erased.

Step 2: Milling the grooves for the drawer rails and rounding the edges

Of course, these works can also be done with a hand-held router. However, a milling table is much better suited for this purpose. Especially with smaller parts, this is not only more practical, but also safer!

Milling the recesses in which later the drawer rails lie. These may vary depending on the rails used. In this case, they are 30 mm wide rails. The correspondingly wide groove is placed in the middle. In the rarest cases, you have exactly the cutter to hand just needed. Also in this case, the groove was created with a 16 mm wide cutter. However, this can be solved with the corresponding settings of the stop (20 mm distance from the groove to the edge of the side part of the drawer).

With a round-head cutter, the profiles are now milled into the edges of the doors and drawer panels.

Use a chamfer cutter to machine all relevant edges of the apothecary cabinet. These are all that could later pose a risk of injury. To find out which ones they are, place the pieces together and then mark the edges with a pencil. So you keep the overview and do not forget which edges are to be edited!

Step 3: Prepare wood joints

For furniture of this type, a dowel bur can be used.

Of course, there are many ways to connect pieces of wood together, such as wood pieces. Nails, screws, round dowels, etc. But a non-visible type of connection is of course the most beautiful. An inexpensive alternative is the universal dowelling gauge by Wolfcraft. This is already available from 25 € and with it can be made wood connections with round dowels very well.

When working with dowel joints, it is very important to assemble the entire piece of furniture at least once "dry", i. without glue. Here are possibly errors to recognize and can be fixed. These can occur when the machine or workpiece slips when working. Also, the order in which you put the items together plays a role. Here, the principle "from the inside out" has proven itself. Assemble the parts in the following order: 5,6,9 + 1,2 + 7,8 + 3,4. The outer walls are installed last. Much more annoying is it, if errors only at the final assembly notice!

Step 4: Sand the surfaces and edges

With an eccentric sander you grind all parts 2x with 240 grit.

TIP: Moisten the wood slightly between the sanding cycles and then let it dry for a short time (10 min.). This has the effect that individual wood fibers set up again and the sanding pattern is even finer at the end. Especially if you make a surface treatment makes sense, because through the wet paint, glazes or oils, the wood fibers can set up again. By moistening the wood during grinding this can be prevented for the most part.

Step 5: Assemble

Now you can assemble the individual parts with glue and dowels and, for a secure hold without slipping, secure them with screw clamps until the glue has dried. Always use a pad to avoid damaging the surface of the future shelf.

Important: Put the individual parts together again according to the principle "from the inside out".

TIP: Make sure that there are enough matching clamps!

Step 6: Build Drawers and Doors

First glue together the parts for the frame, but do not let it bind. Spread wood glue between floor and frame and place the floor on the four parts. Align the frame to the floor, ensuring that the drawers are exactly at right angles (assuming the floors have been cut to size, pay attention!). Fix the floor with a few nails and secure everything with screw clamps until the glue has dried.

In the meantime you can use a 35 mm Forstner drill to drill the holes for the concealed hinges in the doors.

Carefully clamp all glue surfaces.

The sliding surfaces only need to be glued.

Step 7: Surface treatment

Remove any glue residues with a suitable tool before surface treatment (a sharp steel is used here).

Depending on the taste and type of wood used, you can now paint everything, grow, glaze, etc. However, beech has a very beautiful grain which is why wood oil is particularly suitable for it. It "fires" the wood again correctly which makes the wood structure wonderful!

Apply the oil evenly with a cloth (or similar). When working, wear a respirator and household nitrile gloves. Latex gloves dissolve with wood oil. Repeat this process at least two times and let the oil in between them for about 1 hour.

Step 8: Assemble the drawer rails and hinges

To ensure optimum functionality of the drawers, use pull-out rails. They glide much better than partial extension rails, but are also a little more expensive. But the investment is worth it! Screw in the rails at the specified intervals (see technical drawing) and mount the doors. Thereafter, the drawers can be inserted.

TIP: It is helpful if you put the furniture on the side for mounting the rails and doors!

Step 9: Attach the drawer panels

Lay the piece of furniture flat. Mark the center at each aperture. Place all the panels on the cabinet and align them. Lock the bezel by holding it with your hand. Now drill completely through the entire material (cover + drawer box) and repeat this procedure for all drawers.

Important: Mark the drawer panels so that they can later be assigned to the corresponding drawers again. This is important because the bezels are not all connected in the same place with the drawer box. Add some glue between the panel and the drawer box before fitting the furniture handles.

Step 10: Mount the back wall

The back wall is made of 3mm MDF and is 554 x 636 mm. It can be fastened with nails or back wall screws.

TIP: Fix the back wall with two clamps. Now it can be easily aligned and screwed!

The construction of this cabinet requires the basics of wood processing.

To build such a pharmacist cabinet can take several days, but the reward is an individual and beautiful piece of furniture. And the feeling "I did that myself" is priceless anyway!
