A principle of using a saw can already be deduced from the shape and stability of the saw blade: If this is stable and plunges over a large length in the material, this saw is intended for long and straight cuts. For cutting contours and radii a narrow saw blade is needed - the narrower the saw blade, the smaller radii can be cut.

Due to the different applications, it is impossible to do all the work with a saw. The saw is therefore one of the tools of which there are often many different designs in the workshop and it is difficult to make the right choice when buying.

Which saw do I really need?

There can not be an exact answer to this question, as there are universal saws as well as many special saws and saws which, due to their design, are not suitable for all cutting guides. However, those who just want to set up a workshop and have not defined their area of ​​expertise can easily cover the basic requirements with a few saws.

The following overview presents some variants of saws and should facilitate the first purchase decision.

Saw it safely

There are tools for easy surface finishing and tools that aggressively grip the material. Sawing is one of the aggressive tasks with a high chip removal, which results in a special safety risk. The ability to easily separate wood and even metal into two parts makes it clear that a saw does not stop at fingers. In addition, saws sometimes require a lot of power for their cutting and work with a high speed or a high cutting speed.

As with any tool, especially with a saw: Always read the operating instructions and safety instructions in advance, Sometimes it's small, avoidable mistakes that can lead to serious injuries.

With many different designs, however, it is difficult to establish uniform safety rules for all saws. However, there are some basic rules that already contribute to increased safety at work.

  1. If the shape allows for machining, clamp the workpiece to be machined, if possible. The sharp tooth shape and high speed of circular saws can cause workpieces to be thrown away.
  2. Always saw in the opposite direction and never in synchronism. "Counter" means that the saw is pushed in the direction in which the teeth engage in the material. The material must therefore be pressed against the cutting edges. In a "synchronization" it can happen that the material is pulled independently in the saw.
  3. If the material to be sawed is firm and the saw is guided, always pay attention to a good and possibly additional counterhold. In the direction in which the teeth of the saw blade point, the workpiece must be tight. In a jigsaw, the teeth point in the direction of the base plate, which is also used as a counterhold for the workpiece. The direction of rotation of circular saw blades additionally generates a force in the cutting direction.

Much begins with the universal jigsaw

In addition to hand saws, the first saw is usually a jigsaw - and for a good reason: It is inexpensive to buy and covers almost all application areas. With a narrow saw blade, contours can be sawed and with the aid of a stop - depending on the quality of the saw - also very good and long straight cuts can be made. With different saw blades you can saw wood, plastic and even limited metal. A jigsaw is therefore sufficient for the first DIY work. But even later, when more saws follow, a jigsaw is essential to sawing radii and cutouts.

When buying a jigsaw you should value good quality, because even if jigsaws are quite simple, they have many sources of error. Already some play in the lead can lead to saw cuts or the cut is not executed at right angles.

If the quality of long straight cuts is no longer sufficient with a jigsaw, or if the time required for doing so is too great, in most cases you will need to buy a circular saw. Although such a saw can only saw straight - this is done with the help of a guide rail in perfection and allows for an enormous work progress. If the portable circular saw also contains a diving function, the circular saw can be used to make additional cutouts in wood. The disadvantage, however, affects the round saw blade, which cutouts in corners can not be performed exactly.

Circular saws settle in different price categories and basically differ in their depth of cut and performance. Another focus should be on the availability of a guide rail, because not every cheap model allows the use. Quickly cut something or saw at a certain angle? Then there is a need for a miter saw. Although the simpler miter saw would like to be called here, its version uses less and less, as it can only be adjusted laterally at the desired angle. The miter saw additionally includes the possibility of inclining the saw blade, whereby the angle of the saw cut can be adjusted simultaneously in two directions. Since today almost all miter saws can be adjusted in several directions, the exact name has become a minor matter and a saw with the name "Miter Saw" can also be adjusted in all directions. Decisive in this case are the details of the technical data.

Crosscut and miter saw for angle cuts

The design of the miter saw makes it possible to cut workpieces to length quickly and without major set-up work. The workpiece is fixed with two contact surfaces and already guided very safe, which makes the use of the saw quite simple. To make the cut, the saw must be lowered with the saw blade only with one hand. No saw is faster for this form of saw cut. Here, however, only the cutting length and depth of cut can be used, which allows the size of the saw blade, which limits the work area quickly and can reduce a small miter saw on the sawing of strips.

A crosscut saw - or correctly "miter saw with traction function" - enlarges the possible cutting area, in that the saw blade can be moved additionally. Thus, the possible cutting length increases by the length of the tension function. Since any form of movement in a machine can cause additional inaccuracies, when buying a saw with traction function is to pay particular attention to a stable design and backlash-free tension mechanism. Especially miter and miter saws with or without a pull function can therefore differ enormously in their price. Only stable, high-quality versions guarantee exact angle cuts with a very good repeatability.

Angular cuts with a table saw

If long cuts are possibly required with high repeat accuracy, the table saw can replace a circular saw and extend the functional area. An easily adjustable stop eliminates the need to align a guide rail and also an additional pad for fixing the workpieces is not needed because the table saw brings their table. But the table saw can do even more, and anyone who has ever tested their functions will appreciate the benefits: Miter cuts are quickly set and even angled cuts with an adjustable stop and a sliding carriage are no problem. An established stop ensures many consistent cuts and the integrated suction allows a relatively clean work - relatively, because circular saws spread the chips due to the high speed of the saw blade and a good suction is possible only conditionally.

An extension and improvement forms the Panel saw. If table saws are equipped with a small sliding table, the sliding table saws always work with a sliding table. As a result, the wood no longer needs to be pushed over the table or along a stop, which can quickly lead to inaccuracies. The material to be sawn remains firmly on the table, can even be fixed and is pushed with the entire table against the saw blade. Band saws create contours in thick materials

Band reels with two rollers and an additional adjustable guide allow band saws to use narrow saw blades while still achieving a very straight cut in thick materials. For this purpose, it is possible to fall back on different saw blades, which differ in particular by the different toothings and restrictions. In order to ensure trouble-free working and to avoid tearing of the saw blades, the blade thickness should not exceed 1/1000 of the roll diameter.

One of the great advantages of band saws is a much more economical work, which differs from many other saws by a non-existent empty return stroke. The band saw not only allows straight cuts, but with a little practice and experience, cuts with a curly shape are no longer a problem.

Band saw for contours and thick materials

The band saw has become a common tool through continuous development in recent years. Through fast and precise work, not only professionals like to rely on this tool, but also more and more ambitious hobby craftsmen. The band saw is used in the processing of metal, plastic, textiles, leather and aerated concrete. Her focus, however, continues to be on woodworking. There she is one of the indispensable classics, especially among carpenters and carpenters. Their continuous cutting movement not only allows a tremendous work progress, it also all existing teeth of the saw blade are used evenly, resulting in a very long life and low wear.

In the private sector band saws are mainly found as stationary machines in different sizes, but they are also called electric hand band saws produced.   • Also more in the forestry area is the chainsaw to find. With a big sword and a circulating saw chain, it is suitable for sawing large diameters. An exact work is only conditionally possible, whereby it is not to be found in usual workshops for woodworking. With it trees are felled, sawn firewood and rarely rough cut material.
  • Dekupiersägen are suitable for similar, but much finer work the band saw. Instead of a revolving saw blade they work with a saw blade, which is clamped on both sides.
