Aquarium - build the back wall yourself

In order for the aquarium's basin to look like a real authentic landscape, the reflections on the back wall must be prevented. Originally there were only decorative foils that showed either a stone landscape or a living underwater world. Both were rather unreal and poor for an ambitious aquarist. Therefore, we show here how you can build a lifelike back wall.

Individual back wall construction

Styrofoam and tile adhesive can be used to create a very lifelike rock landscape. This rear wall must be sealed with epoxy resin. In addition to the pollutants contained in the material, which can poison the water, the fish would also attack the construction and nibble on it.

Build the back wall of the aquarium step by step

  • aquariums mortar
  • tile glue
  • epoxy resin
  • colour
  • Styrofoam
  • Trowel small
  • Spatula different sizes
  • Cuttermesser
  • brush
  • paint tray

1. Planning

When planning the back wall, make sure that the individual technical elements remain accessible and the filter can still do its job. If a small terrace or a cave is to be incorporated, this must also be considered now.

2nd cut

Towards the front of the back wall, the styrofoam does not necessarily have to be cut clean. Much more real act the later rock ledges when the polystyrene is broken. At the back, however, it should be as smooth and uniform as possible. If you want to hide supply and discharge lines for power and the pump, you can simply release them at the back.

3. Bonding

The individual Styrofoam pieces stick together either with aquarium mortar or cheaper with tile adhesive. When the back wall is fully glued, paint the entire structure with tile adhesive. This gives a good stone structure, which later seems deceptively real.

4. Decorate in color

If the tile adhesive has dried well, you can paint your back wall with earthy tones. That should not be too even. You may be able to paint thin grains in the still moist paint with a fine brush, so the back wall gives an even more real impression.

5. Seal

If you have achieved the desired impression with the colors, the back wall must dry thoroughly. Then it is sealed with clear epoxy resin. So you can even scrub the back wall later with a brush, if it moss sets on it. But with the very smooth epoxy this will hardly happen.

Tips & Tricks

A small beginner pool of 60 centimeters side length with 54 liters content offers little space for a beautiful landscape. A three-dimensional back wall will be at least five inches deep. You should consider whether you really want to give away this relatively large part of the pelvis. A foil, with a stone or a root decor finally does it. In addition, there are now finished plastic plates, which are provided with a relief and not take up so much space.
