Asbestos in the house - is there any danger?

Even today, more than 22 years after the definitive end of products containing asbestos, many building materials containing asbestos are often found in the home and in the house. Some products have even been withdrawn long before 1993. Which product represents a danger in and around the house is shown here.

Asbestos or not?

One of the main problems with asbestos is invisibility. There is usually the same building material once with and once without asbestos. However, the older a material is, the more likely it is that it contains asbestos. Although it was known as early as the beginning of the seventies that asbestos is strongly causing cancer, many building materials with asbestos were used for a long time. It was not until 1993 that asbestos-containing material was completely banned in Germany.

Asbestos in the house?

In these products the likelihood is quite high if the materials were introduced before 1993:

  • Roofing / Eternit
  • thin layer under old PVC floor
  • tile glue
  • cladding
  • ventilation pipes
  • special adhesives and putties
  • Sauerkraut plates / Heraklith plates / HWL plates
  • window sills
  • insulations
  • Night storage heaters / insulation in heating systems

What danger exists?

In general, most asbestos-containing materials pose no danger as long as the product remains untouched in its place. Especially the externally applied building materials, such as Eternit plates or façade panels with asbestos pose no further danger. Only when the panels are removed or damaged, they release the invisible and highly dangerous fibers of asbestos.

Renovation and renovation

Asbestos is usually dangerous just when you start a renovation or renovation. Tile adhesive or old PVC flooring will be more dangerous if torn out. Even Sauerkraut and the like can be almost never removed in one piece. To contaminate all rooms in the home or in the house when you start the renovation. So if you come across such older products during a refurbishment, you should hire a specialist company.

Tips & Tricks

To actually detect asbestos in a material, a sample of the product must be tested in a laboratory. Of course, this is worthwhile in very few cases, so you should try to clarify all points for or against asbestos and commission a specialist company with the disposal if you expect an exposure to asbestos.
