So the attic is insulated

Depending on the type of use, there are two methods for insulating a loft. If the loft is not to be used as a storage space or as a converted living space, the insulation on the floor surface offers, which also represents the top floor ceiling. If, on the other hand, the loft is to be dry and heatable, the insulation materials must be used directly on the roof. For both tasks, there is a large selection of insulation products.

The insulation on the floor surface

For the insulation of the floor surface special Rigips insulation boards are suitable. The gypsum fiberboards are non-flammable and can handle both changes in temperature and humidity well. Due to their low weight, they are easy to lay and can be easily cut to size, for example for an access hatch. Alternatively, polystyrene rigid foam panels have the same characteristics. If the insulation is to be resistant to tread, the trade offers insulation boards in which the materials styrofoam and chipboard are combined. If accessibility is irrelevant, roll-out insulation, which is also suitable for direct roof insulation, may be considered. The popular glass wool is increasingly being replaced by rock wool, which causes less itching on contact with the skin. For some years, ecological insulation such as hemp or mats made of stone and mineral materials such as clay, flax or loam has also become increasingly important.

Steam brake prevents condensation

Since the temperature of the floor below the attic usually deviates from that which prevails above the insulation, the formation of condensation with a so-called vapor barrier must be avoided. Frequently, special films are used which consist of impregnated or bitumen-impregnated special papers. Films made of plastic or aluminum can take over the function of the vapor barrier as well as specially constructed plates made of plasterboard or Span, which are also offered in the trade. Important is the building permit granted.

Insulation directly on the roof

Rolled insulation panels made of glass or rock wool, hemp or flax can simply be inserted between the rafters and the attic wall paneling after a PE roof liner has been fastened. Decisive for the efficient insulation are the weaknesses of the attic such as corners, joints, cracks, windows and eaves. The industry offers adhesives and tapes, swelling insulation bands and rubber sleeves to prevent excessive draft.
