Apply outside plaster in the durable and right strength

Minimum render thicknesses for exterior plaster are specified in European standards. In addition to these orientation values, the maximum strength moves within narrow limits. The guidelines are mechanically easy to understand. Too thin plaster does not protect the outer wall sufficiently and too thick plaster is too heavy and falls down eventually.

Required properties of the plaster

In most cases, an external plaster on the house has the tasks to beautify the bare brickwork and to protect from the weather. In order to reliably withstand precipitation and wind, including driving rain and gale-force gusts, total thicknesses of about two centimeters are common.

The values ​​between 15 and 20 millimeters, also laid down in the corresponding building standards, combine several features:

  • The plaster is thick enough to have sufficient horizontal tensile strength
  • When making your own external plaster rich two layers of plaster
  • A mineral plaster on the outside can dry and dry in material-preserving periods
  • The surface plaster on the facade can be designed as rough and textured plaster

Plaster species

As a European standard, EN 998 (Specification for mortar in masonry plaster) specifies the minimum plaster thickness of 15 millimeters on exterior facades made of concrete and brick. As a further distinction the plaster types are defined:

  • GP is normal plaster
  • LW stands for light plaster
  • CR refers to plaster
  • OC describes deposit plaster for exterior use
  • R defines restoration plaster
  • T for Thermo specifies thermal insulation plaster

Most outdoor plasters consist of two to three layers, which are applied as a mineral plaster. The total construction height reaches an average of twenty millimeters. Two typical exceptions are:

  • The coarse-grained Munich Rauputz
  • The thickness of thermal protection

Insulating Thermoputze can play their properties only from a thickness of about forty millimeters. They can, similar to the Munich Rauputz, process in layers with a maximum thickness of thirty millimeters. Conventional plasters are in most cases single layer thicknesses of at most ten millimeters.

Tips & Tricks

If you get rid of external plaster from the wall, the plaster itself or the masonry can be the cause. Check if setting cracks cause loosening, moisture build-up or excessive weight of the plaster. Reinforcements in the plaster such as cleaning mats reduce your risk considerably.
