Refurbish or modify exterior plaster by brushing
A weathered and faded façade can shine in a new light with a fresh coat of paint. In addition to the appearance, the functional properties of the building skin can also be improved by brushing. In six steps, a complete painting including preparation in eight to 15 days is feasible.
Aesthetics and color selection
Of course, when a fresh coat of paint is required, the first question is whether to keep or change the old shade. The color of exterior plaster is not completely independent of external factors. The classic criteria in the decision are:
- Color of the roof or roofing
- Color and design of windows and doors including frames
- Provisions and regulations of the locally valid development plan
- Texture of the plaster (smooth or structural plaster)
- Personal taste
- Scenic surroundings, garden and land design
- Deposits around windows, doors and on the pedestal
How to paint your exterior plaster
- Color (possibly with fungicidal additives)
- Maybe primer
- Possible repair mortar

- Hard scrubbing brush
1. Build up the scaffolding
Without good accessibility of the entire façade, you will hardly succeed in painting the exterior facade. With telescopic extensions, the coverage and uniformity is not satisfactorily achievable. A scaffold on wheels or fixed set up allows you to work cleanly and for years.
2. Repair damage
Loosen loose parts around cracks or other damaged areas in the plaster and fill all cavities with suitable repair mortar.
3. Clean
To clean your exterior plaster, you can usually work with a high-pressure cleaner. Especially with scratch plaster, it is unbeatable. He should not exceed 150 bar pressure. Alternatively, the old plaster must be brushed off.
4. Priming
Depending on the absorption you should apply a primer if necessary.
5. Primer
As with any painting on walls, first stroke the edges and corners with a brush. The surfaces are then painted as quickly as possible and wet in wet with a long-pile painter's quilt. If possible, work with at least two people.
6. Final top coat
Follow the same procedure as for the primer. Change the strokes from vertical to horizontal and vertical again.
Tips & Tricks
In order to be able to estimate the duration of the coating work, the external conditions are important. You can expect two to four days for an average single-family dwelling for a complete renewal in moderate weather conditions per house side.
