Exterior plaster for the facade between function and appearance

The exterior plaster on the façade has a whole range of other functions in addition to its optical form. As a building shell, it protects against the effects of the weather, prevents precipitation and often provides the moisture balance of the masonry. As individual as the building and the inhabitants, it must be tailored to the individual case.

Claims to the facade plaster

Functional and optical properties determine the exterior plaster on the house. He should keep frost, rain and wind in one or more colors. The surface creates an individual appearance through smoothness or structure. The material supports or seals the diffusion and drying of the masonry.

Structure of the surfaces

The surface structure can be chosen freely and is usually not affected by the valid development plans. The choices are:

  • Straight flush
  • Reibeputz
  • Kratzputz
  • disk cleaning
  • Strukturputz
  • pebbledash

For structures of all kinds, care must be taken that no too deep "dirt traps" such as grooves or notches are created.

Putzarten with and without resin

Four plaster types are suitable as exterior plaster:

  • A mineral plaster like a lime cement plaster
  • A synthetic resin plaster
  • A silicate plaster or silicone resin plaster

All resinous plaster types seal the masonry. Mineral variants, which include silicate plaster, allow diffusion.

A special application technique is the spray plaster outside. In principle, it can be executed with all types of plaster, but requires considerably less work with rough plaster surfaces.

Special forms are precious plasters, which are mostly dyed through. Exterior plasters are mainly used for the renovation of façade sockets.

Colors and coloring method

The color selection of the exterior plaster raises the question of whether coloring or painting makes sense. For both variants, there are advantages and disadvantages that must be weighed individually.

Mineral plasters are easy to spread, which accommodates the restriction in color selection when dyeing through. Resin-based and silicate plasters can also be dyed through in almost any color. Attention must be paid to the respective local development plan.

Tips & Tricks

For most plasters, there is a balance between diffusibility and closure of the masonry. You hardly need to supplement inorganic plasters, as organic plasters may require supplements, for example, to prevent mold growth.
