The exterior plaster on the house forms a beautiful and protective building skin

An external plaster on the house is perceived primarily as a visual cladding of a bare brickwork. In addition to the design aspect, it fulfills insulating and protective functions. The basic structure is the same for the different plaster types. The building wall covers not only wall surfaces but also other components and joints.

Putzarten and construction

All common outdoor plasters are applied in two layers. After laying the flush, the top coat is applied. Both layers can be processed in more than one operation.

The flush is in all cases a mineral plaster. It can be applied with inserted reinforcement or freely. The mineral plaster also includes the lime cement plaster. Four different types of plaster are laid on the flush:

  • Again mineral plaster
  • dispersion plaster
  • Silicone resin plaster
  • silicate plaster

Optical demands and effect

For the appearance, the texture and color of the exterior plaster are crucial. Depending on the type of plaster, the exterior plaster can be colored or painted. Since the color selection during dyeing is relatively limited, a brushable exterior plaster is often chosen. The condition also influences the visible degree of soiling. Depending on the load and location, a suitably cleanable exterior plaster is applied.

weather protection

Precipitation, temperature fluctuations and wind are the main stresses on the exterior plaster. Special inhibiting or repellent surfaces can compensate for heavy rainfall.

insulation

If the masonry is insulated on the outside, the plaster covers the insulating material. Fiberboard, Styrofoam and Styrodur can serve as plaster base. With special construction layers, heat-insulating composite systems can be integrated in the exterior plaster. As an alternative Thermoputze are possible, which produce a limited insulation effect without insulating layer.

plinth plaster

At the lower level of the building, the exterior plaster touches the perimeter insulation. For the lower transition area up to a height of about two meters, a special base plaster is applied. It can be colored, but it does not have to be.

The texture and optical structure of base plaster can be identical to the rest of the exterior plaster. In this case, the external plaster used on the facade is often enriched with aggregates and "stretched".

Tips & Tricks

Decisive effect on the appearance of your plaster has the selected grain size. Whether you can scratch, model, rub or spray plaster depends mainly on its grains.
