Sew awning fabric

The fabric used for awnings is characterized by a particularly high longevity. Nevertheless, even the best clothing reaches its limits at some point. Then an awning must be re-strung. For this it is necessary in many cases to sew the awning fabric. Afterwards you will receive information about sewing awning fabric.

Numerous properties that awning fabric must possess

The covering of an awning must be extremely resistant. In addition, she must also bring other features:

  • Protection against UV radiation from the sun
  • high temperature fluctuations (summer, winter)
  • resistant to water
  • waterproof
  • resistant to suddenly high pressure (gusts of wind)
  • has to be well stretched
  • must be rolled up tight
  • must be impregnated without adverse effects

The awning cover must be renewed regularly

All these factors still play an important role today, which is why awning fabrics have to be replaced after 10 to 15 years. The change of the awning cloth is therefore part of the awning owner's work to be carried out over and over again. This also often involves the sewing of the fabric.

Material quality of awning fabrics

However, it must first be taken into account that awning fabrics have developed massively in recent decades. In the past, primarily a plastic-cotton-fiber mix was used. Today, newly developed synthetic fibers are often used, which fulfill the above-mentioned properties very well. However, this is accompanied by a very high density of the fibers.

The quality is also crucial

Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that awning fabrics are available in a very high quality as well as a lower quality (cheaper). It depends ultimately on how exactly you proceed when sewing the awning fabric. In detail, used materials such as needle sizes or thread, but also the stitching technique depend significantly.

For sewing awning fabric is an industrial sewing machine to be preferred

But there is another problem. In some cases, the sewing can of course be carried out with conventional household sewing machines. For many special works but industrial sewing machines would be preferable in any case. In particular, when sewing a hem, not only the needle size, but also the sewing machine foot can cause difficulties because the folded awning fabric for sewing can be too thick and thus too tight.

Various sewing on the awning fabric

Depending on which awning (for example, articulated arm, pergola or rope tensioning awning) you would like to sew the covering, various sewing work must be carried out:

  • hem
  • piping
  • Loops and bows
  • eyelets
  • Velcro

Material and sewing needles

If a hem is not too thick, you can use denim needles or more stable sewing needles on household sewing machines. UV-resistant nylon threads that are extra strong - for example Nylbond extra strong - are suitable as a thread. Then several tracks Kappnähte are set together. Zig-zag seams are only recommended for elastic materials, but this is only partially the case with awning fabrics.

Tips & Tricks

Many awning fabric manufacturers offer not only the fabric pre-cut. Also, the different seams are done with the same. These include the hem and piping seams. So you should always try to let as many seams as possible to the awning fabric supplier, as it also has sewing machines and industrial sewing machines.

After sewing and replacing the awning fabric, it may need to be post-treated. How to impregnate an awning can be found here.
