Impregnate an awning

Awnings are fixed. In addition, they are exposed as sunscreen of strong UV radiation. In addition, the weather conditions additionally weaken the awning covering. Therefore, it is necessary to impregnate the awning at regular intervals. Afterwards you will learn how to prepare your awning for impregnation and what else to consider.

The awning covering has to endure a lot

Especially as sun and privacy protection, the fabric of an awning is particularly exposed to the weather conditions. But even in the awning housing condensation can form, so that your clothing gets wet. Because the awning or the covering is exposed to several dangers:

  • UV radiation from the sun (material fades and becomes brittle)
  • Moisture damage (mold and mildew due to rain and condensation
  • Algae growth (also makes the supple material porous)
  • possibly oils and harsh detergents due to improper maintenance

Modern awnings must be impregnated only after years

Modern and newly purchased awnings (in particular high-quality branded products) have a covering made of newly developed manufacturing processes, the fibers of which are on the one hand very dense. This already reduces the attack surface of the clothing against various adversities enormously. On the other hand, awning fabrics are usually impregnated ex works. Such a modern awning must therefore usually be impregnated only after 5 to 10 years for the first time.

Agent for impregnation

For the impregnation you can distinguish between conventional and very specific impregnations:

  • conventional impregnation emulsion
  • conventional emulsions with mold and mildew protection
  • Paraffin, wax and other substances
  • modern impregnations based on nanotechnology (real nano-products!)

Preparations before impregnating the awning

First, the awning must be fully extended. In addition, the clothing must be absolutely dry. However, in most cases you need to clean the awning before you even think about impregnating. On this occasion you should also carry out maintenance work on moving awning parts, as otherwise you will unnecessarily burden the impregnation with other sprays.

Repair the fabric

Under "Awning squeaks" we have described the maintenance of the mechanically moving awning components. After cleaning the awning, you should also inspect the clothing for damage. This means that you may need to sew the awning fabric before you can start the actual impregnation.

Apply the awning impregnation

But then the fabric must be absolutely dry immediately before impregnation. The impregnation itself is then applied with a sponge or preferably a spray bottle. Simply spray the impregnation evenly. In terms of saturation, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for impregnation.

Tips & Tricks

Clearly, impregnating your awning with nano-technology is preferable. Although the nano-impregnation is significantly more expensive, but also has more advantages. The impregnation is significantly more durable and protects the awning fabric from mechanical damage. In the process, polymers are applied. These crosslink and form a closed, even under the microscope extremely smooth surface. Dirt particles slip off quickly (similar to lotus effect), in addition, mechanical effects penetrate the impregnation much more difficult.

Again and again you can hear from the tip that you could impregnate an awning with hair spray. However, the ingredients for the cotton synthetic fibers are far too aggressive.

The awning fabric can consist purely of synthetic fibers, but also a synthetic fiber-cotton mixture. Even then, the specific choice of a suitable impregnation is aimed. The specialist trade advises you here to your awning fabric.
