To paint a balcony

The balcony is literally exposed to wind and weather due to its exposed location on the house facade. Thus, every average balcony is associated with a particularly high maintenance and care. This includes painting or varnishing the balcony. What should be considered when painting the balcony, you will learn afterwards.

Painting and varnishing from the balcony is important

The balcony is on the outside of a building. Even a balcony loggia lying within the building's floor plan is affected. In order for the extensive balcony to be renovated or even refurbished, the regular painting or varnishing of various components is on the plan:

  • Side and back walls
  • Balcony parapet or railing
  • Attachments such as sight or wind protection

Back of the balcony - mostly like a facade

The back wall will mostly be plastered masonry painted with facade paint. Accordingly, you proceed as if painting a facade. First of all you have to check the consistency of the plaster. With the scratch test, you determine whether the plaster is porous or still solid. With the water test, you can determine how absorbent the substrate is.

Renovate plaster or prepare

Broken, cracked or friable plaster is extensively knocked out and replaced with restoration plaster. Depending on the facade color used, this surface must also be cleaned or sanded if necessary. Especially when the paint is overflowing with color dust when stroking it by hand. You can follow the link we have made to the facade and learn in detail how to proceed exactly.

Paint balcony railing

The parapet is mostly made of the same material, ie bricked. Likewise, especially in a loggia, the side parts are also bricked. Again, you can paint the surfaces like any façade. However, the balcony railing can be a little more differentiated. Here often different materials are used.

  • Wood or wood glue components
  • Metals and light metals
  • Glass or acrylic glass with a metal stand
  • Plates of different materials

Paint wooden balcony railings

With wood, there are again the biggest differences. Numerous wooden balconies from the 1990s were built using pressure impregnated wood. However, it has long been recognized that these woods are also rotten and rotten. This raises the question of whether it is even worthwhile to paint them with wood preservatives or to replace these woods as part of a renovation of the wooden balcony.

Used wood preservatives, paints and glazes

Conventional wooden railings, however, are embedded with a wood preservative or a corresponding glaze. The wood is sanded and then possibly (if necessary) primed and painted. You can do this as when painting wooden windows (outside). However, be careful not to use wood preservatives on the balcony that could be harmful to your health.

Refit glass and Plexiglas on the balcony

Glass is cleaned conventionally. On the other hand, acrylic sheets (Plexiglas) can be restored if it turns cloudy and milky in the course of time. You can polish the acrylic, but of course you can varnish Plexiglas. Follow the links, get the appropriate guides or instructions.

Balcony railings made of metal: aluminum and galvanized metals

Then of course there are balcony railings made of metal. These are often made of light metal on newer handrails, such as today popular railing rails made of aluminum. Most important is the corrosion protection of the aluminum. In conventional metals, this often consists of hot dip galvanizing. Here are the special features of hot-dip galvanized metals to consider. For more information see "Corrosion protection with zinc".

Paint and varnish metal balcony railings

Ultimately, this is then only the painting or painting of the balcony railing of ordinary metal opposite. Again, the corrosion protection plays an important role. Accordingly, a corrosion protection primer should be painted after sanding and before the actual application of paint. How to paint a metal railing, we show you here.

Tips & Tricks

In addition to the painting of the balcony but other maintenance work of enormous importance. This is how a balcony must be able to drain efficiently. But often mosses or lichens grow here or there are dirt deposits. This would mean stagnant water, which can significantly add to the balcony structure. So you should do this work when painting the balcony.
