Build balcony table

Build balcony table: build

A beautiful morning, bright sunshine, the coffee is ready and you sit on your balcony and have breakfast. But not on an old plastic table, but on your self-built folding table. When the sun is shining, just turn the integrated sunshade aside. After the table has been cleared, it is folded to save space and you can set up your sun lounger next to it. The parasol of course stays in the holder and continues to provide shade.

When building the table, the work is divided into individual assemblies: the base frame, the plate and the two struts. After cutting, these groups are marked so that you can see which parts belong together. Weather resistant dowels can be used for the connections. Everything is glued with weather-resistant PU adhesive. The table consists entirely of finished planed smooth-edged boards, which you can buy in the wood specialist. The chosen wood species should be weather-resistant. We used Douglas fir wood.

Below is a detailed step by step guide:

1.1 Saw the individual parts of the table to the dimensions indicated in the material list. The two diagonal braces (Pos. 8) of the undercarriage are cut off on both sides with a 45 degree bevel.

Lay the individual parts of the supports (items 8 + 9) together as they will later be glued.

1.2 For easier orientation, the parts are marked with a carpenter's triangle and numbers.

The individual parts of the table top (pos. 5 + 6 + 7) should also be folded together and marked with a triangle.

1.3 Between the slats of the table top (Pos. 7) 8 mm thick spacer blocks are placed.

2.1 To connect the frame parts waterproof anchors are used with a thickness of 8 mm.

Drill two dowel holes into the crossbar of the struts (items 3 + 4). To drill accurately, it is helpful to use a dowel template.

This is placed from above on the board and has on the bottom pins to position them exactly.

2.2 If you twist the template until the pins touch, the desired dowel hole is exactly in the middle of the board. With a dowel size of 8 x 40 mm, the holes in the struts are drilled approx. 25 mm deep and in the sides with 15 mm. To drill all holes at the same depth, use a depth limiter. Now drill all holes in the struts.

2.3 The position of the holes is transferred to the counterpart with the small centering pins of the template, which are inserted into the dowel holes. First, the exact positions of the boards must be marked. Then, with the tips inserted, a strut is pushed to its position on the side. The resulting depressions are the centers of the holes.

3.1 Adjust the drilling depth and now also drill the holes in the sides (item 1). In order for these holes to be exactly vertical, you should also use the dowel template here. If the number of your clamps is limited, you should glue the individual elements with a time delay.

3.2 That is, once the dowel holes are drilled in a component, all visible edges are rounded off generously with a hand sanding block or an edge trimmer. The compounds are all glued together with weather-resistant glue (D4) or PU (polyurethane) glue. First, the dowels are glued into the struts.

3.3 Hit the dowels with a hammer all the way into the hole. In the counter holes also adhesive is specified and the frame is put together. Clamp the parts with clamps, make sure that all butt joints are closed and the underframe is braced at right angles.

4.1 For the remaining connections, the workflow is the same. It is always first marked the position of the boards to each other. Then two holes are drilled with the dowel template in the cross-wood and transferred with dowel tips on the counterpart.

4.2 Make sure that all components are connected at right angles. After curing, excess adhesive is removed with a pry bar. Polyurethane adhesive can not be removed like glue in the wet state with water.

4.3 If you want to remove the adhesive when wet, this is only possible with wash dilution or acetone.

Tip surface

Of course, if you want a surface quality that is suitable for outdoors, you also have to use a suitable agent. You have to decide in advance if you want a colored or transparent surface. For colored surfaces, there is a selection of glazes that offer something for every taste. For transparent surfaces you can use lacquer or oil. Paint forms a better, closed surface, but tends to crack and can then be infiltrated by penetrating water and peeled off. Oils have a more open surface, making them more susceptible to dirt and needing to be refreshed more often. But there is no cracking.

5.1 At the upper narrow surfaces of the supports, a recess is sawn with the jigsaw. All edges and surfaces should be ground with an orbital sander or a hand sanding block. Last cut grit P180. If you want to make the table colorful, the items must be painted before assembly.

5.2 Clamp the frame of the table upside down on the worktable. Place the plate upside down in front and connect both parts with two hinges. Attach two hinges to the supports as well. The supports are now attached to the frame.

5.3 Tighten the hinges with a clamp. It is helpful to puncture the exact center of the holes with a spade bit. The first support is flush with the front edge of the hinges attached to the frame. The second must be so far back from the front edge that both do not interfere with folding.

6.1 An end point is defined for each support with a stop block (item 11). A small wedge (item 12) on the inside, on the one hand, prevents the unintentional pushing back of the supports with the knee, on the other hand, it facilitates the unfolding. In the cover plate, a hole is drilled through which fits the pole of a parasol.

6.2 Now you can connect the cover plate (item 2) with screws (Spax 3.5 x 35) from below to the frame. The screw holes are pre-drilled with a 3.5mm drill bit. Then the hole for the parasol is also drilled through the underlying strut.

6.3 The end point for the parasol is a block (item 10) with the same hole, which is screwed onto the lower strut. For wooden railings, the table is bolted to the railing by the rear strut. For metal railings, the table is clamped with a board from the outside and through bolts.
