Wall a balcony

Each balcony also needs a railing or parapet. Not everyone is satisfied with the solution on his balcony. For example, many homeowners repeatedly consider walling their balcony accordingly. However, when walling or walling the balcony, the special features that this entails must be taken into account.

The location of a balcony is taken into account in the construction engineering

First, the most striking feature is that the balcony is attached to a prominent location on the facade of a building. He is thus exposed to the weather conditions for better and for worse. Now, however, the different types of balcony must first be distinguished, as it is dealt with differently for each specific balcony:

  • loggia
  • roof loggia
  • cantilevered balcony with cantilever
  • superior balcony (annex or front balcony)

The balcony types

The loggia is a balcony, which is created inside the building. This balcony usually has a roof. The balcony slab is at the same time the false ceiling of the corresponding projectile.

The projecting balcony consists of a concrete slab that juts out from the facade. Then a slope screed is applied to dehydrate the cantilever in the future efficiently.

At the roof loggia, the balcony can also be found inside the building. In principle, this balcony is a dormer without dormer construction. The drainage of the balcony is also of great importance here.

The cantilevered balcony and the walls of the parapet

Supervisors and cultivation balconies, however, usually consist of wood or light metal. So they are anyway not suitable to wall the balcony or the parapet. Consequently, it is the cantilevered balcony where the walls of the balcony are most likely to be considered. You can wall the sides and / or the front of the balcony.

The cantilever must be able to drain

However, the cantilever and above all the circumferential masonry must be designed so that the drainage can be guaranteed. Balconies from the 1970s and 80s often have parapets that are completely connected to the floor slab. In between, only drainpipes were incorporated.

A brick parapet usually means stagnant water

This method of construction today often means considerable problems in the renovation, since the drainage after years is often only deficient. This is not recommended. Instead, after a row of stones, half a stone could be left open again and again. Nevertheless, water will accumulate behind the stones, which can not drain away.

Structure of the cantilever

In addition, the balcony structure of the cantilever is also special (from bottom to top):

  • concrete slab
  • Separating layer or separating layer
  • Screed with slope

The masonry simply put on the cantilever does not work

This decouples the screed on the balcony from the concrete slab. But if you would just wall it, this parapet would not be firmly connected to the cantilever. Even if you put iron irons horizontally and also around the corners to the sides, this masonry parapet is not really connected to the cantilever and there is (at least after a few years) an acute danger of falling of the parapet.

But piercing the cantilever is risky

The same applies if you only want to wall posts on the balcony in order to install a railing in between. Piercing the cantilever plate to connect iron to it means at the same time destroying the layer structure, water can penetrate into layers that are supposed to be protected against water. So if you really want a bricked balcony, you must discuss the project with a specialist. This company should have experience in the construction of balustrades and railings on balconies and terraces.

Tips & Tricks

In addition to the parapet, attention is paid to the flooring if you want to wall the balcony. In this case, the drainage should be done through a drain mat, which can be found under the actual covering. "Paving the Balcony" describes how to loosely lay concrete slabs to maintain a flat floor surface while still providing efficient drainage.
