Do balcony sealing yourself: a simple guide

Balconies are exposed to the weather in every season. Ingress of moisture leads to massive damage relatively quickly, especially when the frost unfolds its explosive effect. Therefore, the surface of a balcony should always be well sealed. A balcony seal can be made quite cost-effective, we will provide you with instructions for the application of liquid plastic.

Various sealing methods to choose from

To seal a balcony, various methods are suitable, particularly practical is the coating with liquid plastic. Here are some ways to choose:

  • classic sealing with bituminous membranes
  • Seal the balcony with plastic sheets
  • mineral sealing slurries of fine cement mortar
  • Sealing with one-component liquid plastic
  • High load-bearing balcony seal made of 2-component liquid plastic

One-component seals are particularly suitable for intact substrates that are not exposed to high loads. Under certain conditions, the 2-component material effectively seals even damaged surfaces.

Instructions for balcony sealing with 1-component liquid plastic

  • 1-K plastic sealant
  • sealing tape
  • quartz sand
  • Paint roller for application
  • Ring or flat brush

1. Remove flooring

Before you can make your balcony seal yourself, you must first remove the old flooring completely. You also need an absolutely dry, stable surface - and a smooth surface.

2. Apply liquid plastic with an ink roller

Most liquid plastics do not require a primer, follow the instructions for use. Carefully apply the material with the paint roller without leaving any gaps.

3. Carefully seal edge zones

Pay special attention to the edges, so that no leaks arise here. For some sealing systems, edges are first taped with sealing tape and can then be wet-on-wet with a brush.

4. Let it dry

Let the first coat dry completely. The instructions for use provide information as to when the material can be walked on and painted over.

5. Apply second layer

Applying a second coat is highly recommended. This makes the waterproofing more robust and any gaps are now closing. Some coating systems are also three-layered.

6. Sprinkle quartz sand

If you want a tiled floor for your balcony, then sprinkle in the still wet last layer of silica sand. In this way, you ensure that the tile adhesive holds on the ground.

7. Let dry completely

Now be patient until the sealed floor is completely dry. This can take up to 48 hours or more, but if you load the surface too soon, you may end up ruining your seal.

Liquid plastic is also available with a decorative surface as an alternative to the floor covering. You can choose from many different colors and structures - saving you time and money.
