Expose the beams from above or to the skeleton

In old building and truss rehabilitation often exposing the beams in ceilings and walls is inevitable. The same is true at least in part when damage such as sponges or insect infestation, decay or other emerging static defects must be detected and eliminated. The effort depends on the ceiling construction.

Start from the top and check access

When exposing wooden beams in a floor slab, the type of filling of the interstices and the flooring or screed on the wooden beam ceiling is decisive. If the panels are closed from below and / or above, panels must be removed from above or a screed must be removed. This may require hammer, chisel and milling.

In order to be able to carry out an assessment of the condition of the bar and minor repairs, it is often sufficient to have the beams in the ceiling found and exposed from above. This saves the renovation of the entire ceiling structure.

To edit wooden beams, restore and replace if necessary, a complete removal of the interstitial fillings is necessary. Depending on the age and construction, the ceiling framework consists only of bare beams or, in addition, of rattan or stah wood.

Common types of construction of wooden beam ceilings

The age of the building provides information about the murals of the wooden beamed ceiling. Six variants with the respective fillers are common:

1st building until the beginning of the 18th century with loam and dust fillings, mostly uneven.
2. Building 18th century with straw, clay, manure and other vegetable fillers, often with horizontal stak wood joints between the beams, also wrapped.
3. From the 19th century with crossed stak wood joints between the beams with clay and sand fillings.
4. Wilhelminian era with elapsed straw mix and holding ear tissue.
5. Early days with slaked clay, coke-filling, coke-meal and double tubular fabric.
6. From the mid-20th century with artificial insulating materials such as polystyrene (ball), foam, construction foam and natural fibers such as hemp and straw.

Tips & Tricks

The neuralgic points of the support beams are their lateral supports. For control and damage control, first clear the side beam heads and check the condition. Only supplement or renew the fixings if the wood substance is in order. If you extend one or more wooden beams, you will work with professional taping techniques.
