"Who's tidy is just too lazy to search." or "Genius dominates chaos."

Such sayings are heard very often and are often meant to be funny. However, those who, like many, have to be content with a small cellar or a small workshop, for whom such statements have a very special meaning. Little space means that many things need to be stacked or put in a row in the closet. Anyone who does not maintain order will quickly lose track and start searching in the smallest space. Especially in small rooms, it is important to keep order. It is difficult for small needs, such as nails, screws, nuts or spare parts. These usually store in disused boxes and cans that are difficult to accommodate in a cupboard.

With our construction manual You can build a shelf yourself, that only as deep as the boxes and cans used, therefore hardly takes up space, is cheap and yet ensures a lot of order.

Glulam, the cheap timber from the hardware store

The title "glulam, the cheap timber from the hardware store" is actually not quite correct, because Glulam is made of different woods and therefore can vary a lot in price. However, if laminated wood is compared to solid wood, this is a really favorable alternative.

Glued wood is made of real wood strips or pieces, which are glued together. Due to the large proportion of real wood and only a small amount of glue required is laminated wood Comparing with solid wood, however, offers some advantages. The multi-piece composition minimizes tensions in the wood, preventing cracking and minimizing warping. The possibility of using smaller pieces or strips, but makes laminated wood cheaper. For a board one meter wide it is not necessary to cut down a one meter diameter tree. For this purpose, smaller trees, shorter pieces or even remnants can be used, which serves the sustainability and waste prevention.

The fact that laminated wood is not always cheap, of course, is due to the type of wood used. Pine and spruce are quite soft, fast growing, come from European forests and are therefore cheaper than beech or even tropical woods. As a basis for many simple projects, glued-wood boards from the hardware store are therefore ideal. you are available in many standard sizes and sometimes even the cutting can be omitted with good planning, which proves our example of a self-built shelf.

Material requirements and required tools

Basement shelf / workshop shelf - build your own shelf: build

Our Construction manual refers to the use of standard dimensions, which are available in almost every hardware store. Accordingly, the required tools are very limited. Even if the finished shelf is to deviate in size, a large selection of different glued wood panels does not require any cutting. With widths of 20 cm, 25 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm or 60 cm can be almost ever desired shelf depth implement.

  • router
  • grinding tool
  • clamps

The material requirement is limited to available in the hardware store sizes of laminated timber. Depending on the offer and your own wishes, these can of course vary.

  • 2 side panels 200 cm x 20 cm x 18 mm (2 x 4.99 €)
  • 9 shelves 60 cm x 20 cm x 18 mm (9 x 1.49 €)
  • wood glue
  • optional paint color

Our construction manual of the workshop or basement shelf costs are not even 25 €. Cheaper is to get a shelf in this size barely.

Planning and dividing the shelves

If you want to build a shelf for the workshop or the cellar yourself, you will usually find solutions for special accommodations. Our example shows a sorting rack, in which old milk and tobacco cans should facilitate the sorting of screws, nails and other small parts. However, since the shelf is very simple and also has no back wall, the shelves must be firmly connected to the side panels and can not be adjusted later.

To get the planning right, prepare yourself and divide up the subjects. If a shelf is placed on the workbench, it can be done quickly try what will fit into a particular subject. Measure now the highest point of each "Fachfüllung" and strike for a margin of 2 cm on the measure. In order not to lose track, it is advisable to make a list of all dimensions that may look like this:

Plan shelf height correctly

The "Platz nach oben" serves to hold the top board. If this were to be set up, it would have to be slightly longer than all others. This sawing work is saved by attaching this board, like all other boards, by means of grooves in the side walls.

  • 20 mm - space upwards
  • 18 mm - board 1 (38 mm lower edge 1st groove)
  • 180 mm tray 1
  • 18 mm - board 2 (236 mm lower edge 2nd groove)
  • 200 mm - Tray 2
  • 18 mm - board 3 (454 mm lower edge 3rd groove)
  • etc.

If the notated dimensions are added, the distance between the bottom edge of the groove and the top of the board is calculated. When approaching the total length of the side boards, the lower end of the shelf can be planned. Since the basement or workshop floor is rarely really dry, It is recommended to leave the bottom compartment open. On the one hand, it provides space for ventilation and on the other hand, the shelf spacing does not have to be divided exactly. Simply set the number of compartments from the top according to the given scheme until the bottom is still usable. This can later be used for shoes, cable drums or anything else. In the example shelf was a cable drum and a large battery charger space.

Grooves of the side boards with the router

The router is basically the only electric tool which is really needed in the construction of the shelf. Although many grooves can also be performed on the table saw, in this case we advise against it, since 2 meter long boards are difficult to guide evenly and straight over the table saw.

A crossbar as a guide for the router

However, the work can be simplified if both boards are clamped together. An additional strip serves as a stop and guide the router. To determine the distance from above, in the first step, the distance of the milling cutter to the contact surface of the router is measured and added to the first two noted dimensions (20 mm + 18 mm). With this distance, the bar is fixed with one or two screw clamps. The diameter of the cutter does not matter at the point. The cutting depth should be about 8 mm, but also need not be accurate. It is important that a stop is set up for this depth of cut, which applies to all grooves.

Side parts can be milled at the same time

Many cutter ranges have a 12mm diameter end mill that should be used here. However, since the boards have a thickness of 18 mm, of course, still missing 6 mm. These can be adjusted easily by placing a 6 mm rod (M6 threaded rod) between the guide and the router. The result is a very precisely fitting groove of 18 mm.

For the next stop, again, only the first measure the board thickness of 18 mm and the next compartment height added, In order to avoid subsequent errors during measurement, which can quickly occur when measuring from marking to marking, all other set dimensions should always be additionally checked by the upper edge of the board. Of course, a good stop angle to control squareness also helps.

Priming and painting all shelf parts

Whether in the basement or the workshop, everything is rarely clean, it runs something, dusty... In short, it is important to protect the wood and on occasion also wipe out wet.

Glue surfaces can remain free

This protection is achieved with a dense varnish layer, which closes the surface and above all resistant to moisture.

Spruce wood, however, is very absorbent, so that the paint color would be absorbed immediately and would result in a very high paint consumption. Therefore, it is It makes sense to first provide the surfaces with a primer. If you then use a very dark and well-covering color, the color of the primer does not matter. For a desired white shelf, a primer should also be done in white.

No paint color on the glue surfaces

When example shelf came a black water-based primer used, as it is often used in vehicle painting. The advantage is that it penetrates well, regulates the absorption and can be covered with almost any color. The later glue surfaces can be omitted in the primer. However, since the primer is largely absorbed and does not form a closed surface, it does not harm the subsequent gluing if the glue surfaces are also primed.

Saturated job seals the surface

After a complete drying the paint color can be applied. This can be done at this point, but also after assembly. Of course, if the shelf has not yet been glued, this simplifies the coating process, which also achieves a uniform layer thickness.

The order of the paint color should be in two layers, with the drying time specified by the manufacturer respectively. Of course, the large flat surfaces are predestined to use a roller instead of a brush. It enables particularly fast work progress with a uniform application of paint. However, no long pile roller should be used to avoid paint on the glue surfaces. A foam roller is better suited for this purpose. In an emergency, paint can be removed at the glue surfaces but with some emery cloth again.

Angles help with the construction

Gluing and construction of the workshop or basement shelf

Before the shelf is glued, It should be set up for testing, which of course can also be done lying on the workbench. In this case, it is checked whether the application of paint has possibly led to the fact that the shelves no longer fit into the grooves.

Weights replace screw clamps

Was the test setup successful, the gluing can be done. Since several boards must be inserted into each other, express glue should be avoided and instead use Classic glue. This dries slower and allows the rest of the construction in peace.

Narrow shelves should be fixed to the wall with an angle.

The glue should be applied full, to give the shelf more stability. Shelves without rear wall otherwise tend to collapse laterally under load. Therefore, it is also very important that all floors sit in a groove. A simple screw connection would not cope with the load.

After the glue application, all shelves are inserted. Previously erected angles at both ends stabilize the structure and guarantee an exact right-angled shelf. When gluing should be taken to ensure that leaking glue is immediately wiped away with a damp cloth.

If all the shelves are in the first side wall, the second side wall can be placed and weighted. To protect the painted surface and avoid scratches please Cardboard or the like inferior. Screw clamps should only be used if a screw clamp is used per shelf or if a hardwood ledge is additionally placed on top. Individual pressure points would deform the shelf.
