In the Restoration of classic cars One must often paint metal parts to the pure sheet surface and rust. This is either very difficult with the grinder or, much easier, with a sandblast blower.

Sanding parts with a professional is quite costly, but it does the blasting process in itself no witchcraft. So if you already have a compressor in your workshop and frequently sandblast parts, you should think about building your own blast cabin. For less than 200 euros you get a practical and above all generous beam option, which is fully scalable and, moreover, stable and self-built.

This manual does not use specific dimensions; The reason for this should be the maximum adaptability of the blast cabin to individual needs. This is how the construction works according to the desired application, the space available or the installation location judge.

Door for blast cabin

First mount the outer housing based on our drawing. The goal is to be a stable, your size ideas adapted and above all dense wooden box. For very large blast cabinets, however, you must think about the need for multiple glove feedthroughs and possibly also use multiple viewing windows.

The door should be constructed according to your requirements: Depending on the probable size of the blasting material, this can be larger or smaller. In any case, the door must be dust and pressure tight. We therefore recommend the use of a refrigerator seal and for fixing, wing nuts. (see diagram).

Fit inspection window

The viewing window has a double function:

Glass is not recommended as a material for reasons of fracture and thus injury Acrylic glass does not break and is easy to work. However, it reacts very easily to harder materials and therefore scratched quickly.

Around Here a cheap yet safe compromise To find the lens has two layers: A "thick" acrylic glass screen as a shield, the thin, cheap PE disc is presented. This is of course scratched when blasting, but can be easily and inexpensively replaced. Hose guide

Elastic seals are essential for the reliable sealing of the passages of the pressure hoses; they must also be pressure- and dust-proof. The retailers sometimes have elaborate solutions - but these do not fit your needs and are quite expensive.

We therefore recommend a conceivably simple construction of a bicycle hose and two large washers - does not cost five euros! For right and left-handers, this can be easily mounted on both sides.

Drill first a hole for the hose passage in the side wall, 15-20 mm should normally suffice here. Four holes are then drilled in the middle of the edge in two washers with a 10 mm wide edge and 20 mm inside diameter with a 5 mm HSS drill bit.

Then the bicycle hose is used: cut two pieces about 5 cm wide and press it flat. These two pieces are now clamped inside and out with the washers; the hoses are pierced to it. Finally, everything is screwed tight with four M5 screws and nuts.

For the hose feedthrough becomes crosswise a cut of about three millimeters set in the middle of the "rubber seal". Through this cut the compressed air hose is then forced with some effort; inside as well as outside. The rubber then contracts and keeps the interface dustproof and flexible at the same time.

The glove feedthrough can be built comparatively simple: Saw two or, for larger cabins, several holes in the vertical front wall using a 10 mm hole saw. The gloves are now pushed through the holes. The 12 cm steel rings, each with four 8 mm holes for the screws provided, are plated on the front and back.

For fixation will the hand opening of the glove trapped in the outer metal ring. It must be stable and able to withstand strain - so try to make sure that the glove will come off in extreme and jerky movements in the blast cabin. For safety, you can also fix the glove with sealant or suitable adhesive in the holder.

The catch box is, as shown in the picture, mounted with a bevelled bottom, so that the blasting material can collect over the opening of the vacuum cleaner connecting piece. Above the catcher box the grid is inserted, through which the blasting material falls into the catching box.

For a clean and dust-tight installation of the safety box We recommend a wood component adhesive and the subsequent sealing with sealant. This is also used to connect the vacuum cleaner tube airtight.

Lighting for sand blasting cabin

The Illumination of the blast cabin is quick and easy to build: Build a simple box from the 12 mm chipboard, in which the fluorescent tube is mounted on the lid from the inside. The cable goes through the side.

In the lid of the blast cabin now saw a rectangular hole, about 3 cm less tall and wider than the fluorescent box lid. Now cut the second acrylic sheet appropriately, with one centimeter of protrusion, for the opening and glue it firmly to the edges with sealing compound. Then the light box is simply loosely attached and the lamp connected - the lighting is ready.

Pressure test and commissioning

Everything ready? Then you can dare a test run - before that, however, the pressure test should be carried out. Close all openings of the blast cabin and cover the ventilation opening by hand. Now turn on the nipple - at full power.

When everything is tight, feel a strong suction on the palm, and the gloves will be pulled inwards. If there is nowhere whistling or whistling, the cabin is actually tight.
