Why does a boiler have to be cleaned?

Before you can start cleaning the boiler, the heating system must be switched off and have cooled down sufficiently so that there is no danger of burns. In addition, make sure that there is a temperature sensor on the cover, which must be carefully removed, so that the supply line can not be damaged.

In order to avoid an uncontrolled air supply in the combustion chamber and an unintentional heat release, this is usually closed with a solid door or many screws, which ensures a uniform system of the lid. First, loosen all the screws before removing them completely.

After opening the lid, the combustion chamber is visible and can be cleaned with a wire brush or a special boiler brush. Boiler brushes have extra long bristles, which makes it possible to reach even tight spots. In between, it is helpful remove dissolved impurities with a dust or industrial vacuum cleaner. Please do not use a household vacuum without ash filter. The fine dust quickly sets the dust bag and can damage the sucker.

Once all deposits have been removed and thoroughly exhausted, check the combustion chamber for particularly deep rust and possible water leakage before replacing the cover. Occasionally there is a sealing cord on the lid, which seals all around and must therefore be completely intact. As with disassembly, all screws are first inserted and tightened by hand. Only when the lid has been centered by all the screws in its position, the screws are tightened crosswise.

If the panel is attached, the heater can be put back into operation and a correct function can be checked.

Tools for boiler cleaning

Cleaning the boiler requires little special aids and can be carried out without special accessories. Needed:

  • possibly screwdriver, fork or ring wrench to open the panel and the combustion chamber lid
  • Wire brushes in different shapes for dissolving deposits
  • optionally a stove brush to reach tight spots
  • optional detergent for intensive cleaning

Special combustion chamber cleaners can simplify the cleaning work. The application is similar in most cases and is limited to spraying or brushing the combustion chamber surface. After a predetermined exposure time, the oven is heated briefly, whereby deposits are released. Once the oven has cooled down, it can be easily brushed off and swept or vacuumed.

The right temperature is crucial

After successful combustion chamber cleaning, controlling the exhaust gas temperature is important. Depending on the manufacturer's instructions, this should be between 140° C and 180° C with the boiler water temperature set at 50° C. This temperature range minimizes the formation of condensation and ensures a sensible loss of exhaust gas.

Even if a lower exhaust gas temperature appears more economical and efficient, the formed condensation would combine with deposits to form a sulphurous acid, which attacks and damages the combustion chamber, which causes increased costs.
