Isolate base plate yourself

The bottom plate is also an outward facing component such as the walls and the roof. With this, it must also be insulated - according to legal regulations. But how do you do it?

Possibilities for insulation in the area of the floor slab

Basically, you have two options here: the insulation on the floor slab or the insulation below the floor slab. The latter is the better option in construction, as there is still room for additional insulation upwards, which otherwise would not be available. Especially for building owners, who pay particular attention to very low U-values in the building, the floor slab is a very important criterion, especially for non-basement houses, but even where basement rooms are planned to be heated later. Overall, the floor plate is a very large area, so it also has a high impact on the overall U-value of the building. With an insulation only on the bottom plate, the possibilities remain untapped.

Structure of the insulation below the floor slab

Substructure: on a level, load-bearing and compacted surface first the ring foundations are poured, then there is a layer of foam glass or gravel, which is also compacted and made as level as possible.

Insulation layer on this gravel layer or foam glass layer are then laid XPS boards in about 8 cm thickness and covered with a plastic film by the line. At the edge of a circumferential Randdämmstreifen, usually 1 - 2 cm thick, set.

actual bottom plate on this plastic layer is then poured the actual bottom plate

Additional insulation below the screed can once again be laid with a floor thickness of up to 10 cm thick insulating layer to ensure an even better insulating effect.

Minimum insulation thicknesses are prescribed

They are the subject of planning and are calculated by the architect on the basis of the applicable provisions in the EnEV and firmly prescribed. Of course, they may be exceeded at any time - however, one must take care that in a very heavily insulated house under certain circumstances, a constant forced ventilation is necessary, otherwise it may lead to mold in the house. This raises the question of the cost-benefit effect and the constructional risk.

Damp the base plate yourself

The necessary work for the insulation of the floor slab can also be easily carried out yourself, but you should go to it as carefully as possible to avoid later the emergence of cold spots by misplacement in the insulation.
