Painting the bowl - that's how it works


Porcelain or ceramic bowls can be painted by simple means. How to create individual gifts or decorate your bowls very differently. There are different ways to paint the bowls. Acrylic paint is suitable, but then the bowls are no longer usable for food. Special porcelain paint is also available in many colors, so here is the guide.

1. Prepare dishes

Whether you want to paint a bowl, or even a cup or a plate, in any case, the dishes must be absolutely clean, dry and fat-free. Therefore, the dishes are first washed hot with detergent and then rubbed with a sponge, which was dipped in vinegar. Afterwards, the dishes should be rinsed off easily with clear water and then only touched with the tea towel.

2. Painting

If you use a template, you can easily draw the outlines of the painting with a soft pencil on the porcelain. Instead of a pencil, you can also use a charcoal pencil. It is important that you get as possible no fingerprints on the bowl, because otherwise the color does not hold properly.

Then carefully paint your subject on the bowl. In glazed porcelain small errors can often be corrected for a short time.

3. Let it dry

Read the instructions of your ceramic paint as exactly as possible. For most manufacturers, it is recommended to let the paint dry for about 24 hours. But that may differ, depending on the producer and product.

4. burn in

No, you do not have to buy a kiln to paint your bowl yourself. After pre-drying, the porcelain is baked in the oven. The temperature and duration required for baking are specified on the manufacturer's instructions.

It is often stated that your newly designed bowl should then be allowed in the dishwasher. But in the interest of a long shelf life of the elaborate painting you should rather wash the bowl by hand.

Tips & Tricks

If you just want to perpetuate a lettering or a happy greeting on the bowl, you will find in craft shops special pens that last long on ceramic or porcelain. You can not put the bowl into the dishwasher, but you do not have to burn in the color.
