Can sandblasting clinker?

Again and again, clinker are treated by sandblasting. What purpose should have this, what happens with the brick stone and whether the method is actually suitable, read in detail in this post.

Purpose of the method

Sandblasting is used on clinker bricks by some homeowners for a variety of reasons:

  • for cleaning the clinker (especially of paint and mortar residues)
  • to achieve a "more rustic" look
  • for repairing sanding joints

Cleaning the clinker

The liberation of paint and mortar residues (especially in old clinker facades, if the building of the facade was worked dirty) succeeds with sandblasting only very limited.

For this you have to accept the massive damage to the clinker, which occur as a result. Sandblasting damages the densely sintered surface of the clinker.

The pores previously closed by the sintering are now open, with the result that the clinker can absorb much more moisture and in the open pore channels now also algae, mosses and lichens can hold and make wide. In addition, there is a risk that sandblasting removes a great deal of joint material.

Achieving a rustic look

If meant "rustic", the project is successful. Clinker bricks can last up to 100 years or even longer - but they look like 50 years older when it comes to such unsuitable treatment methods as sandblasting. The above-mentioned damage to the clinker also apply here.

Repair joint sanding

Sanding joints are an indication of wrong or already severely damaged joint material. Here is a comprehensive renovation of clinker facade inevitable. The re-jointing of the clinker should in this case necessarily be carried out by an experienced refurbishment company.

Damaged joints also carry the risk that the water absorption capacity of the joints is significantly higher than that of the clinker. In this case, moisture damage can also threaten.

Suitable cleaning

A very gentle cleaning is the so-called JOS micro-beam process. It is an internationally and scientifically recognized very gentle cleaning process and is generally recommended by all relevant bodies.

In contrast to sandblasting, a mixture of air, water and special blasting material is used here, which is set in rotation and fines out in the form of a cone at the end (high air content in the jet). This will treat the surface much more gently. For clinker facades, such cleaning should be carried out with around 1 - 2 bar working pressure.

Tips & Tricks

Always have heavy soiling and damage to the clinker façade removed by a specialist - so you can avoid even greater damage in the future due to unsuitable measures.
