Lay carpet loose or glued to tiles

A tiled floor is either pushed or has more or less wide joints. In floors laid on joint floors, the carpet can usually be fixed selectively or fully glued without much effort. To lay carpet on grouted tiles, the joints must be filled. Rough tile surfaces have no special requirements.

The workload determining factors

Several properties of a tiled floor determine the preparation and installation costs of a carpet:

  • Joints with widths over one millimeter
  • Surface sealing and absorbency of the tiles
  • Adhesiveness of double-sided adhesive tape
  • Negotiable space for the construction height

If joints of more than one millimeter width are present between the joints, they must either be filled in or a complete coating of the tile floor with leveling compound or cover plates must be made.

With glazed ceramic surfaces of the tiles, a thorough cleaning is sufficient to prepare the laying. If the surfaces consist of porous surfaces such as terracotta, a primer or a primer must usually be applied to give the adhesive a stable adhesion basis.

To fix the carpet with double-sided adhesive tape, it must be checked whether the adhesive surfaces adhere to the tiles permanently and with tensile strength. In particular, "dusty" tiles and unsealed natural rocks such as terracotta often do not provide ideal substrates. If necessary, point bonding with liquid adhesive should be considered in this case.
The height of a tiled floor is increased by the adhesive layer and common carpets or rugs from about one centimeter. When applying a leveling compound, a minimum of another five millimeters must be calculated.

Loose or floating installation

If a joint-free tile surface is made, the floor should be thoroughly cleaned with degreasing cleaner. When loosely laying a carpet should be attached to a wall as possible without a door or passage. A longitudinal strip of double-sided adhesive tape forms the first anchor fixation. Then the carpet is fixed piece by piece, with the largest distances between the adhesive dots should not exceed fifty centimeters.

Glued installation

If necessary, a primer must be applied before full-surface bonding. The adhesive is used according to the manufacturer's adhesive instructions.

Tips & Tricks

If you want to cut carpet tiles and lay them on tiles, you should always cross the old filled joints with the carpet tile joints and not let them run parallel.
