Lay cement tiles

Cement tiles are on the rise again. This also increases the demand for the right laying technology. Below you will find all the important information and instructions for laying cement tiles.

Differences lay other tiles and cement tiles

Basically, the laying is more demanding compared to conventional ceramic tiles. In a fit come marble dust and cement. Then comes on this layer of cement mortar, smoothed and pressed. The cement tiles must be stored depending on the weather conditions until they are completely dry. That can take many weeks.

Special features of cement tiles

Both the shapes and the manufacture of each cement tile must be identical, so that the dimensions are correct and edges are clean. Of course, it is not possible to keep tile colors absolutely uniform in solid colors as well as patterns. Therefore, on the one hand always a continuous production batch should be purchased, in addition, the cement tiles for the most homogeneous overall appearance within this batch to mix well.

Cement tiles not suitable for every surface

The substrate for laying the cement tiles must also meet high standards. Here are the key points:

  • absolutely level ground (please level irregularities)
  • preferably low-vibration ground (preferably concrete, screed, cement floor, etc.)
  • the floor must be dry (note that it is ready for laying on the screed floor)

Aftertreatment of the laid cement tiles

After laying and grouting the cement tiles, they must be aftertreated. For this it is important that the glue is dried and the tiles are also no longer moist. You can impregnate or seal cement tiles. To lay the cement tiles, a cement tile adhesive is selected that is suitable for natural stone slabs and tiles. It is usually a white cement glue.

The gap between cement tiles

Special attention is paid to the joints. Cement tiles should be laid as crunchy as possible. The joint width should not exceed 2 mm. Some tilers also say that a maximum of 2.5 mm are possible. The peculiarity of cement tiles is the laying pattern, which works harmoniously through the smallest possible joint.

Laying the cement tiles in the mortar bed (Buttering-Floating)

At the same time, the thermal expansion is less pronounced and the dimensions of one tile to the next are more uniform than in the case of ceramic tiles, which is why a small joint width is possible in the first place. Is then laid in a cement bed. This is done by using the toothed trowel with the buttering-floating method.

The bottom of the tile and the floor in the form of a bar are cross-referenced with glue. Cement tiles should only be laid by an experienced craftsman. Otherwise, it is recommended to hire a tiler with appropriate expertise.

Step by step guide cement tiles

  • Primer or primer (use with less or strongly absorbent substrate)
  • Cement tiles (if possible from one batch)
  • Cement adhesive for natural stone slabs and tiles
  • special grout based on trass cement and quartz sand (mixing ratio 2: 1)
  • Cleaning agent (suitable for cement tiles and marble)
  • Impregnation or sealing (suitable for cement tiles)
  • Aids for cleaning the substrate
  • mortar bucket
  • Electric drill with stirrer
  • Trowel (Trowel or Traufkelle), size 10
  • Grouting tool (sponge, sponge board, grout with rubber lip)
  • Guideline, spirit level

1. Preparation of the underground

The substrate must meet the requirements already mentioned, ie be even, dry and low in vibration. Screed floors must be ready for laying. Then the floor is cleaned accurately so that it is completely dust-free. If necessary, apply the required primer (primer or primer) according to the instructions for use.

2. Laying the cement tiles

The laying of cement tiles is started in the same way as the other tiles. We offer you numerous guides and instructions in the house journal. The touched tile adhesive (note the instructions for mixing by the manufacturer) is now applied in the buttering-floating process. Make sure that the height of the bridge is always the same.

So always put on the tile adhesive with the same angle of the trowel. Then the tiles are pressed across the glue bars on the floor in the mortar bed. This is done with light pressure and slightly circular movements. Do not fix with the hammer - the cement tiles could break! The skill lies in pressing the tile evenly through the pressure movement described in the adhesive bed.

3. grout cement tiles

With grouting, wait until the cement tiles are accessible. Wait longer. The values stated on the adhesive pack differ due to the different height of the adhesive bed, the weather conditions and the properties of the substrate.

The joint mortar is mixed with two parts of trass cement and with a part of quartz sand with mixing water. The grouting takes place in principle as with other tile materials. But make sure that the grout is removed quickly from the tile surface.

So you can avoid larger cement stains from the outset. Clean the grouted tile floor with a gentle cleaner. Cement stain remover is extremely aggressive and of course attacks the marble dust and cement surface of the tiles. Read more about cleaning cement tiles here.

4. Theses

After the newly installed cement floor tiles have dried completely, an impregnation or a seal can be applied. Protect the floor until this first post-treatment and later maintain the optimal refreshment times for impregnation of the sealant (especially depending on the mechanical stress).

Tips & Tricks

The cutting of cement tiles also needs to be learned. Here's how you can cut a cement tile optimally.
