Impregnate cement tiles

Cement tiles are again very popular, but require a lot of attention in maintenance and care. This includes the preparation of cement tiles in the form of an impregnation. How you can impregnate cement tiles and why this is so important is explained below.

Cement tiles are open-pored and therefore very sensitive

Cement tiles are not fired, but hydraulically pressed and then dried. The coloring surface consists mainly of marble powder or marble dust, cement and color pigments. As a rule, cement tiles are not further pretreated. This means that cement tiles are porous. All types of liquids and other substances can thus penetrate into the cement tiles.

Many substances are pure poison for cement tiles

For example, the importance of impregnation becomes particularly clear when the cement tiles are laid in the bathroom or kitchen. Many substances are already harmful to the surface:

  • Acids (citric acid, vinegar, other fruit juices etc.)
  • Cleaner based on acid
  • distilled water
  • Oils and fat
  • chemical products such as shampoos, soaps, etc.

The wetness in cement tiles

In some cases, these products and fabrics not only destroy the cement tiles, but penetrate deep into them and lead to unsightly stains. On the other hand, a cement tile also reacts very sensitively to permanent moisture. This is important when laying cement tiles. The wrong glue, wetness in the ground - all this can cause damage.

Before impregnation, the cement tile must be absolutely dry

Therefore, the cement tile must be impregnated or sealed, but it must be absolutely dry before. If moisture in the tile "locked" (or rising wet from the ground), it comes quickly to efflorescence of the cement. In short - minerals are flushed out which also tend to stain.

Impregnate with oil, wax or impregnation with water glass

Before impregnation, the tiled floor must be absolutely clean (pre-clean), but it must not be damp immediately before impregnation. For impregnation you can use oil or wax. How to incorporate wax in the cement tiles, you can read here.

However, oiling or waxing is a bit antiquated and obsolete by the time. Modern impregnations, which are suitable for marble and similar (calcareous) natural tiles and tiles, can also be used in cement tiles. There are also special impregnations tailored to the cement tiles.

Water glass as a contemporary and efficient cement tile impregnation

These often contain water glass. Water glass has the advantage that a chemical process is triggered. The tile combines with the impregnation and forms a thin hard and thus dense layer. This process is called silicosis. Especially in wet areas these impregnations are particularly well suited.

Tips & Tricks

The application of the impregnation should be carried out either by an expert or a craftsman with appropriate expertise. Otherwise, staining may quickly occur. Cement tiles are indeed beautiful (both visual and tactile), but also extremely sophisticated. But you get the value permanently - used old cement tiles are traded at real maximum prices.
