Low prices for lightweight concrete blocks

The prices for lightweight concrete blocks, which also include aerated concrete blocks, roughly correspond to normal concrete. A saving effect occurs due to the faster processing capability. For lightweight concrete must be dispensed with some properties, which is not always possible or useful.

Inexpensive with limited usability

In the production of lightweight concrete blocks, aggregates such as expanded clay, slag from lava or pumice are used, which are achieved by trapping air densities of the bricks between 800 and 2000 kilograms per cubic meter. The lightweight concrete blocks are available as solid stones, solid blocks or hollow blocks and are among the cheapest building wall construction materials.

Unlike the prices for heavy concrete, the aggregates are not expensive and the lightweight concrete blocks are a widely used mass product. For private house construction, the mechanical and static properties are sufficient in many cases, even if it is often improved by individual additional construction measures. This applies above all to the following properties of the lightweight concrete blocks:

  • Soundproofing improvement by post-insulation
  • Moisture protection through wall sealing
  • Additional stops and wall for high carrying and point loads

Some other specific characteristics mean that it is not possible to completely dispense with normal concrete blocks at similar prices for all wall projects. These include the capillary behavior, the shrinkage behavior and the greater elasticity compared to normal concrete.

So much are lightweight concrete blocks

The prices for the mass-produced lightweight concrete blocks are between € 1 and € 3 per piece and for one square meter of wall you can calculate with around € 10. The savings due to the faster and less complex processing must be compared to additional work required, such as the sealing or attachment of retaining masonry.

How to save

Fill hollow blocks made of lightweight concrete with additional insulating material such as polystyrene beads. In this way you increase sound and heat insulation without additional construction costs.

Tips & Tricks

Pay attention to the limited static load capacity of lightweight concrete blocks. It's not always the case that you have to do without large, lightweight concrete walls, even if they are load-bearing walls. Single pillars may suffice.
