Smooth out the chimney

Visually appealing and weatherproof is the shifting of the chimney. The dark and shiny stone panels can be mounted on a roof slat substructure or an OSB board. The panels should already be beaten for assembly, since the subsequent adaptation is difficult.

Mount flutter-free

The most important task of the chimney is to flatten the slates. Even with a small "game" of individual panels, a loud rattling noise can occur in the wind. In the worst case, the panels come off or break.

Basically, the shifting of the chimney is free of building permits and can be carried out according to personal taste. For safety, however, the consultation of the responsible chimney sweep is recommended. It can provide valuable information on holes in the chimney and the height of any protrusion of the slates.

Dismantle the chimney yourself

  • Roof battens or OSB board
  • screw
  • dowel
  • slates
  • Possibly roofing nails
  • drilling machine
  • Screwdriver or cordless screwdriver
  • Eventually metal bridge
  • Maybe slate hammer
  • holding harness

1. Secure

Secure yourself against the risk of falling. An anchored climbing harness from the sports area is best suited. Pay attention to the wind force.

2. Drill holes

Drill holes in the chimney according to the base. An OSB board can be attached to the corners with four screws. Roof battens should be fixed with two screws.

3. Insert dowels

Use special masonry dowels made of metal. They also withstand strong weather conditions and very strong wind.

4. Fasten the slates

The cut slates can be nailed to the slats or the OSB board with roofing nails. The screw connection is safer and more durable

5. Order and overlap

Start at the lower base of the chimney head and attach it overlapping two to five centimeters row by row

6. Adjust last row

You can make the correct alignment of your chimney by means of prior measurement and corresponding even overlapping. Alternatively, a larger overlap of the last row is possible for adaptation.

Tips & Tricks

Professional roofers work on slate with a metal bridge and a slate bridge. For experienced laymen a slate shear is recommended, with the slate can be cut. In the slate scissors a punching pliers is integrated, with the nail or screw holes can easily be driven into the slate plates.
