Paint clinker efficiently

Especially in northern Germany clinker bricks are very popular as a house facade. Clinkers, however, are also subject to temporal trends in color. Basically, however, clinker facades are among the best and most expensive facades. Therefore, removal is not really advisable. A good alternative is the painting of the clinker. Below is a step-by-step guide to the sustainable painting of clinker.

Clinker facades are the highest quality facades, which should not be removed

In the north of Germany clinker as a facade is a matter of course, but also the south of the republic conquer the sintered stones. Your benefits are simply not to be ignored. They regulate the moisture perfectly, while they exit from the house, but not let from the outside to infiltrate. In addition, there are excellent heat and sound insulation properties. These attributes are rounded off by an enormous longevity of the hard stones.

Now clinker in the purchase and processing are expensive. So whoever clinked up his house made that decision well considered as a solution almost for eternity and supported by qualities central to every homeowner. However, this can also lead to one having "sat up" at some point on his clinker façade. Or you acquire a house and are enthusiastic about the interior design and its location, but not the clinker.

Painting clinker is the perfect alternative - provided you use suitable materials

However, with the first-rate clinker cladding qualities of a facade, it would be almost a sin to remove the clinker. Even those who can not do much with a clinker look, are aware of these circumstances and have discovered a salient alternative for themselves: the painting of the clinker. With paint, the overall appearance of clinker can be changed relatively quickly and in a manageable financial framework - and you do not have to do without the good clinker attributes.

However, you must perform good preparation work when painting the clinker. This includes the accurate cleaning of the clinker, as well as the priming with a special primer. On the one hand, clinker is virtually non-absorbent, so paint does not adhere well. On the other hand, you must preserve the open micropores so as not to lose the moisture-regulating properties. Then paint the clinker with a vapor-permeable paint.

Step-by-step instructions for painting clinker

  • Primer, especially suitable for clinker
  • Facade paint, permeable
  • possibly grout for clinker
  • steam cleaner
  • paint Roller
  • Quast
  • possibly paint spray
  • possibly joint scratches
  • framework

1. Preparation

Preparation of the clinker joints

First, you have to inspect the clinker joints extensively. In places where the mortar already crumbles, you should remove it with a suitable tool (a joint scraper) and replace it with new joint mortar. Only use a grout that is actually suitable for clinker.

Cleaning the clinker

Now it's time to clean the clinker wall. Since the façade really needs to be completely cleared of dirt, it is preferable to use a high pressure steam jet. You really need to do the cleaning with extreme precision, as otherwise the paint may later spill off.

2. The priming of the clinker

After the clinker facade is completely dried, it is primed. Apply the suitable primer for clinker according to the manufacturer's specifications. For clinkers it is not uncommon that they have to be painted twice with primer.

3. Painting the clinker

The primer can also be dried according to the manufacturer's instructions. Under no circumstances should the primer be completely dried, otherwise they can not be silicified with the paint, so it can set.

Now paint the clinker. Either you can use a scooter, under certain circumstances and depending on the size of the area makes a paint syringe sense that you can rent in many hardware stores and tool rental companies.

Tips & Tricks

Do not use a primer indiscriminately. Trapped in the clinker iron parts can be located. These must be encapsulated by a primer with appropriate properties. Otherwise it can lead to corrosion and thus to unsightly rust stains. Preferably use a transparent shade or a shade that matches the color of the façade color.

Especially for such sophisticated surfaces as those of clinker you should rely on products from the specialist trade and not from the hardware store. In construction products, there are usually far more fillers than color pigments, as these clearly define the price.

For clinker, silicate-based paints are usually used, ie either pure silicate paint or dispersion silicate paint. The latter color is likely to be the best choice for many, as the price-performance ratio is consistent, while systems based on pure silicate can be significantly more expensive. Make sure, however, that the primer is compatible with the clinker as well as the color system painted on it.

If you only want visual changes to your clinker façade, you can achieve an appropriate effect by erecting a porch, a bay window or installing color-contrasting shutters. You can also add ivy or wild wine to the facade if you do not want to paint the clinker with paint. In the house journal you will find numerous guides and instructions on the various possibilities.
