Build a cold frame

Cold frame construction manual with blueprint

Build a cold frame: cold

Already in March you can sow the first plants in our cold frame. If you want to sow and plant directly in the field, you have to be patient until the middle of May. In summer, the raised bed is an ideal place to accommodate garden herbs and garden tools: In the herbal care eliminates bending over and the tool searching.

Such a cold frame build home improvement with this illustrated guide and the plan below sketch yourself. Most of our beds are made of 18 mm thick plywood panels glued to water. The solid wood slats are ideally made of larch. L-profiles made of aluminum form the legs. The adjustable disc feet compensate for unevenness and prevent sinking in the ground. In colder areas you should use a better insulating double-walled plate instead of the acrylic glass pane. In the transitional period you can put a Styrofoam plate on the grate in the box as additional insulation.

Building instructions: Building a cold frame

Build a cold frame: cold

1. Cut the individual boards and strips to the dimensions indicated in the material list. On the two sides (item 3), the oblique edge is marked and cut with the help of the circular saw with guide rail.

Build a cold frame: cold

1.2 Using the multifunction table shown in the picture, you can tilt the stop rail and clamp the workpiece firmly against the table. This also allows the aluminum profiles for the legs to be cut.

Build a cold frame: frame

1.3 In any case, the right saw blade (universal or aluminum toothing) should be used and the speed reduced. Important: Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from aluminum shavings.

Build a cold frame: holes

2.1 Drill holes with D = 3.5 mm for the Spax screws (3.5 x 35) in the front and rear wall (items 1 and 2). The four boards that make up the box are clamped together with clamps, aligned and bolted together.

Build a cold frame: frame

2.2 The front board (item 2) can either be beveled beforehand with a circular saw or, alternatively, planed at an angle. Also in the tray (item 4), 3.5 mm holes are pre-drilled for the Spax screws.

Build a cold frame: frame

2.3 Mark the overhang of the board under the shelf, align the board on the box and screw it tight.

Build a cold frame: frame

3.1 The four parts for the snap frame are connected with dowels. If possible, you should use dowels (8 mm x 40 mm) made of waterproof wood (oak, Sipo). The holes for the dowel joint are drilled with a simple template. Mark the positions of the individual frame parts using a joiner's triangle.

Build a cold frame: cold

3.2 First drill two 8 mm dowel holes into the short narrow surfaces of the frame legs (item 6) (drilling depth half dowel length + 1 mm). The holes should be about 10 mm away from the edge and preferably in the middle of the plate.

Build a cold frame: holes

3.3 Insert dowel tips into the holes and transfer the centers to the long frame legs (item 5). The board stretched on the table serves as a stop. Drill the holes with the same drilling depth here as well.

Build a cold frame: cold

4.1 Place PU adhesive in the dowel holes of the short frame legs and knock in the dowels. Then put glue in the counter holes and put the frame parts together. The frame is clamped with clamps.

Build a cold frame: build

4.2 With the clamps, which are perpendicular to the glued joints, slight inaccuracies can be compensated. Apply glue to the support pads (item 13) and place the pads in the bottom of the legs. After aligning the blocks are clamped in both directions with clamps.

Build a cold frame: holes

4.3 After the adhesive has dried in the frame, the clamps are loosened and the connections are ground with an eccentric grinder and sandpaper grade P 120. The top edge of the frame is bevelled either with a circular saw or a hand plane.

Build a cold frame: frame

5.1 Put together the strips (item 9) of the lower grate. Pre-drill the four holes to attach the first and last ledge in the support ledge. Screw the two strips flush with the outside corners. Then slide all strips together and measure the distance to the outer strip.

Build a cold frame: build

5.2 This measure is divided by the number of distances (7). So you get the exact distance measure. Cut a strip of this dimension and place it in between as a spacer. To work more efficiently, you can clamp, pre-drill and screw several strips with spacer blocks in between.

Build a cold frame: build

5.3 The top grate is built in the same way. It is important here that the two outer strips are offset inwards by the distance dimension. Then drill 3.5 mm holes in the support rails of the upper shelf and screw the grid to the box.

Build a cold frame: cold

6.1 For the adjustable feet, round discs (item 16) made of plywood are cut out with a jigsaw. Break (ie deburr) the edges with a hand sanding pad. 30 mm holes are drilled on the underside of the discs, whereby the drilling depth corresponds to the head of the machine screw (M 10 x 80) and a washer.

Build a cold frame: holes

6.2 Then drill the 10 mm through hole for the screws. On the opposite side come first a washer and a nut. Tighten the nut with a spanner or wrench. In the legs are drilled as mating thread to the discs screw-in or impact sleeves.

Build a cold frame: cold

6.3 The drilling depth corresponds to the length of the machine screw. The drilling diameter depends on the type of socket and the manufacturer. If you use the easier-to-use impact sleeves, you should pierce them twice after being hammered in and secure them against slipping out with Spax screws 3.5 x 35.

Build a cold frame: cold

7.1 Drill the holes (8 mm) for the height adjustment of the flap in the closure (item 7). Lower the holes generously with a countersink. Position the hinge on the upper narrow surface of the shutter and align it centered with the long edge flush with the shutter edge.

Build a cold frame: build

7.2 Prick the screw holes with a prong and screw in the Spax screws 3.5 x 25 mm. Fasten the two hinges flush with the flap, 50 mm from the corners and at the bottom. Pre-piercing the screw holes helps to position the screw in the center of the mounting hole so that the hinge does not slip on one side when tightened.

Build a cold frame: build

7.3 Place the flap upside down on the tray, aligning it flush with the sides and tightening. Spax screws connect the flap and the box. Pre-drill screw holes (D = 3.5 mm) in the legs (items 14 + 15) and screw the legs to the box.

Build a cold frame: frame

8.1 Screw the lock in the middle of the snap-on frame and drill the upper hole with an 8 mm drill bit into the box interior. The edges of the acrylic sheet are deburred with a scraper blade or sand paper. Mark the drill holes on the protective foil and drill them with a 3.5 mm wood drill with centering tip. Lower the holes with a countersink.

Build a cold frame: build

8.2 When screwing the disc, place plastic washers between the frame and the disc. Attach a chain to the side of the box and at the bottom of the flap. The closure uses an 8 mm aluminum rod (item 17). Cut it to 60 mm and drill a 4.5 mm hole at one end, through which a key ring (D = 30 mm) is threaded.

Build a cold frame: frame

8.3 To this ring comes a chain with which the alustab is attached to the flap or to the box. For surface treatment you should disassemble the bed again and grind it with an eccentric sander. The final touch is made with a grain size P 180. Glaze the box and frame colored and the solid wood parts transparent.
