Paint the concrete creatively

Concrete is perceived differently today than it was just a few years ago. Exposed concrete, ie consciously visible concrete surfaces are in vogue. However, exposed concrete is not always attractive. Then the concrete should be embellished. Painting concrete is one possibility. You will then receive detailed instructions for painting concrete.

The fascinating contrasts of concrete

Concrete is a fascinating building material. It combines many contradictory properties into each other. Concrete already knew the Romans (Opus Cemaentitium), on the other hand modern concrete is a real high-tech product. In addition, it is so popular because of its enormous compressive strength, on the other hand, concrete is very unstable.

Treating and processing concrete

The latter feature means that concrete is adequately protected so that it is not exposed to the weather, for example. Typical protection results from the sealing or impregnation of concrete. Of course, concrete can also be treated otherwise. You can:

  • Paint concrete and paint
  • Treat concrete abrasive (grinding, milling, sawing, polishing, etc.)
  • Oil or grow concrete

Painting of concrete

Painting concrete is one of the easiest ways to change the appearance of concrete. To keep the paint, you should clean the concrete accordingly and then pretreat with a primer. Because concrete is considered to be weak. Thus, it may happen that the paint or the color you use for painting, flake off after a short time.

Consider solvent vapors and toxins

In addition, you should pay attention to the composition of paints or varnishes, especially if the concrete part is a later furniture or decorative accessory. Finally, there should be no corresponding solvent vapors in living spaces. If you want to paint a container made of concrete in which you want to add water (for example, with water plants), you must also ensure that no toxins are released into the water.

Painting of floor surfaces

If you want to paint a floor in a garage, you must also make sure that the concrete color used with the softeners in car or two-wheeled tire tolerate. Otherwise, this can adversely affect the safety of tires. Furthermore, when painting and painting concrete floors, make sure that it is non-abrasive and non-slip concrete paint. Recently, there are more and more concrete floor products, which are initially color neutral, but later can be blended individually with available colors.

Instructions for the step-by-step painting of concrete

  • priming
  • Paint or varnish, suitable for concrete and according to the requirements of the respective application
  • cleaning supplies
  • Brush and paint roller
  • Paint tray or paint bucket
  • possibly a tool for pretreating the concrete

1. Preparation of the concrete

If you first want to pour the concrete into molds, you must thoroughly clean the hardened concrete. In particular, previously used release agents (concrete release agents, oil) may no longer adhere to the concrete surface.

You may need to thoroughly clean an older concrete surface. Depending on the application, sand blasting or steam cleaning, for example, is suitable for this purpose. For some concrete objects or components, it may also be necessary to sand or polish the concrete in advance.

2. Priming the concrete

Now the concrete can be treated with the primer. Depending on the object and size, you can paint or roll the primer. Please note the manufacturer's instructions (how far the primer may be hardened, but not dried for later painting).

3. Painting from the concrete

Now you can paint the concrete with a brush or roll it with a paint roller. Brush the paint, make it crosswise and wet in wet (across the first stroke or roll as long as the first coat is still wet), to create a uniform, homogeneous paint surface. Depending on the product used, you may need to paint the concrete in a second operation to get bright colors.

Tips & Tricks

In addition to painting, painting or varnishing of concrete, the concrete coloring is also available as an alternative. This color pigments are mixed with the cement. The advantage is that the complete concrete is dyed through. Although the mechanical abrasion that a coating has over time also exists, the coloring always remains.
