Condenser or exhaust air dryer - a comparison


One thing is very clear: drying on a leash is always the most ecological and energy-efficient form of laundry drying. In some cases, however, this is impractical for a variety of reasons - and then a tumble dryer has to go into the house. How an exhaust air dryer works

The exhaust air dryer is the simplest. It is based on the physical principle that warm air can absorb more moisture than cold.

The laundry is tumbled in a drum through which warm air is passed. The warm air sweeps over the laundry and absorbs the moisture. Then the air is directed to the outside and heated again new air.

How a condenser dryer works

Again, working with warm air in the drum. However, in order to remove moisture from the air, it is then cooled down again at the condenser dryer.

The cooler air can no longer hold the moisture. The moisture therefore condenses on the cold surface and the condensed water is led into a container.

Thereafter, fresh air is heated again, fed and passed through the drum, and then dehumidified again in the condenser. This process continues until the desired and set degree of drying of the laundry has been achieved.

When cooling the air, the condenser also generates waste heat, which is released to the outside.

Heat pump technology with these dryers ensures that the heat generated is not lost to the outside during condensation, but is used again to heat up fresh air.

When cooling the air, the heat is thus transferred again and again to the fresh air supplied, so it must be generated much less heat. This lowers energy consumption.

Criteria for the choice of dryer

To decide which dryer is best for you, you should simply check some criteria for yourself.

Installation Site

Exhaust air dryers need a way to deliver the warm, moist air to the outside. That's why you need at least one window at the installation site, which can remain open even in winter during the dry season - or you have to make a wall opening to direct the moisture dryer to the outside.

If this is problematic, you should better use a condenser dryer. He does not need an exhaust path to the outside. For this, the condensate tank must be emptied regularly.

The cheapest are exhaust air dryer. Condenser dryers are a bit more expensive, the models with heat pump technology are the most expensive.

In addition to the initial costs, you should always consider the energy costs in the long term. Exhaust air dryers need the most power, condenser dryer a little less.

The heat pump dryers are around half of the other two variants in terms of energy consumption. You can therefore reduce power consumption by about 50 percent with these devices. That too can be a criterion. The higher initial costs have then quickly paid for frequent use.

running time

A dryer is usually used because you do not have time to let the laundry dry on a leash. The duration is therefore not insignificant.

Condensation dryers usually take a little longer than exhaust air dryers - depending on the degree of humidity of the laundry, heat pump dryers can take 3-4 hours to dry the laundry.

Tips & Tricks

In order to relieve the dryer and shorten the drying time, always set your washing machine to the highest number of centrifugal tumblers. 1600 / min is recommended when using a dryer.
