The construction of a door lock

Although there is always talk of the lock cylinder, when the door lock is spoken, the door lock is yet another element of the complete door mechanism. Therefore, we discuss below the structure of a conventional door lock for you.

The door mechanism in the overview

The complete door mechanism consists of several individual parts. Below we list the most important ones for you.

  • mortise lock
  • Cases
  • bars
  • door handle
  • lock cylinder

Today standardized mortise locks are common

In the past, mainly box locks were used, but the mortise lock has long ago supplanted this design. The mortise lock is also standardized. The mortise lock is a cassette in which the entire mechanism for unlocking and closing the door lock is located. If parts are broken here, the replacement of the individual components is usually not worthwhile, because a complete mortise lock is usually simply cheaper.

In the upper area you will see a square opening, the nut. Here the door handle is inserted. This can be a latch on both sides, but also a doorknob is unilaterally feasible. About the nut the trap is operated with a closed door, so that it can then be opened.

The lock cylinder

Below the nut you can see the PZ perforation in the cassette. PZ perforation stands for "profile cylinder perforation". In the form it corresponds exactly with the appearance of the lock cylinder. The lock cylinder in turn actuates the latch on the mortise lock in any case. In addition, there are also comfort mortise locks. Turn the key in the lock cylinder to the right to stop, so also the trap is opened.

Lock cylinder versions

With the lock cylinders, you can differentiate between many different cylinder types. First, the distinction is made according to safety relevance.

  • Pen and mortise lock
  • cylinder lock
Important differentiators

Mortise and mortice locks are often designed as security locks. Compared to the conventional cylinder lock, they have some advantages. Inside there are pens. These pins can be assigned differently to the key points or holes. Therefore, pin locks are ideal as lock system locks.

Locking systems and identical closures

Locking systems are not only used in multi-family houses and housing estates. You can also install such a locking system in your home, thus opening a wide range of locks with a single key. But if all locks are opened with a key, it is said that there is a lock.

  • Doors indoors
  • Basement and storage doors
  • Garage doors
  • garbage house
  • gates
  • mailbox

At the same time we are already coming to a different need in the construction of the cylinder locks. Therefore, they are also available in different versions.

  • Double cylinders
  • half cylinder
  • Knaufzylinder
  • Engine and electronic cylinders

Striking are also the different colors of lock cylinders. Basically, you can assign colors to specific tasks. However, they can also stand for the material used, from which a lock cylinder was made.

  • stainless steel cylinder
  • various non-ferrous metal cylinders

Dimensions on the door lock

In addition, there are still some important dimensions to be found on the door lock.

  • faceplate length
  • Chest width and length
  • backset
  • Removal of PZ hole to nut
  • frame dimensions

Dimensions on the outside

The cuff length indicates the length of the metal profile, which can be seen from the outside on the front side of the door leaf. Above is the trap, below the latch. The measure between bolt and trap is the Zargenmaß. In addition, this profile can still be different in thickness. About the Stulpstärke information.

Internal dimensions

The box width defines the total width, the box height the height of the plug-in cassette. The distance between the outside front profile to the center of the PZ perforation is called the backset. From the center of the PZ perforation to the inside of the cassette, there is the Hinterdornmaß.

Tips & Tricks

If you want to remove the complete push-in door lock, first remove the door handle (latch, knob, etc.), then remove the lock cylinder. Now you will find a screw on top and bottom of the forend profile. Turn both screws out and you can pull out the entire door lock cassette. There are always discussions, whether locks from the dealer or from the hardware store. Although the high quality speaks for the retailer, but with the increased volume of locking systems with a lock (a key for all locks on the house) can ever be a broken lock. In the hardware store, there are usually no spare parts in the next season, but for good retailers even after decades.
