The joining of copper and copper alloys

Preparation of the copper sheet before soldering

Whether hard or soft soldering - first the copper sheet has to be prepared. You can remove any oxidation layer by sanding or brushing the copper.

Make sure that you have not worked any other metals with the sandpaper. When brushing, pay attention to copper or brass wire. After removing the oxide layer, the copper sheet must still be degreased. For this you can use ordinary ethanol (alcohol).

Copper sheet optimally join together

You must use the capillary effect during soldering. For this purpose, the gap of the two copper sheets to be soldered may not be greater than 0.2 mm. Otherwise, it will not pull the solder optimally into the gap and the soldering seam is not as high load capacity.

Hard or soft soldering of copper sheet

For brazing, use a sufficient blowtorch and the appropriate silver solder with flux. You have to choose the temperature (600 to 900 degrees) as well, as the copper reacts thermally strongly the more you heat it up.

Soldering and soldering in the food sector (drinking water)

For soldering mainly tin-lead or lead-tin solders with appropriate flux are used. These have a working area of ​​around 250 degrees. However, you must keep in mind that lead-containing solders may not be used for copper sheets or pipes in the food industry. Not a few water pipes are made of copper. Then use pure tin as solder.

Tips & Tricks

In addition, temperature development often plays an important role here as well. If the temperature is to be kept as low as possible, there are also solders for soldering, which can be used from around 150 degrees.
