Build a custom desktop yourself

When designing a desk and its tabletop personal taste plays a major role. The size and shape of self-build should be adapted to the usage habits. While some people do not want to accommodate much more than one computer, others need plenty of room to spread.

Needs assessment based on usage habits

In general, almost every stable material is suitable to build a desktop itself. The design variants range from simple planks, planks or slabs up to leather trimmings with precious wood finishes. When planning the personal use habits should first be considered:

  • Are more storage space needed besides a laptop, monitor, keyboard and mouse?
  • Which type of lamp or lighting should be used or placed?
  • Are storage areas in a second level desired as a floor and / or substructure?
  • What weight through technical devices, paper, files and leaning affects the tabletop?

Answering the questions leads to the ideal size of the tabletop. As a rule of thumb, with versatile use, even for "paperwork", an open space of six to eight DIN A4 formats can be used. There are also stand areas for appliances and lighting.

Material selection

As a plate material, acrylic glass, concrete, real glass, fibreboard, wood, plastic, natural stone or a material mix come into question. The specific properties of the materials have an effect on the mounting of the table top.
With a thickness of the tabletop of at least two centimeters, the stabilities except for plastic and acrylic glass are sufficient to allow free floating to eighty centimeters. This level is sufficient to create a comfortable workplace with leg room on the long side of the desk top.

Inlays and insoles

If you want to build a noble to luxurious desktop yourself, you can combine different materials and construction types.

  • On a lower plate, a frame can be attached, which produces one or more recesses. In the "tubs" can be inserted with leather, velvet or textiles related plate pieces.
  • When a tabletop is veneered, it is possible to create attractive offset optics from different decors and types of wood.
  • Under transparent acrylic or real glass, photo films, fabrics or other decorative design materials can be attached.

Tips & Tricks

If you want a lot of space on your desk and are looking for a depth of more than eighty centimeters, a semicircular recess at the seat can improve the accessibility of all places.
