Repair damaged tile joints: tips and tricks

A complete joint renovation takes a lot of time. Sometimes it is sufficient to repair damaged areas and to visually adapt to the old joints. How does this work?

When cleaning does not help anymore

If merely cleaning the tile joints with home remedies or special cleaners does not help, then there is still the possibility to repair the affected areas. However, they can also cover uneven discoloration with joint paint. Repair is the tool of choice in the following cases:

  • crumbling grout
  • partially moldy joints

In case of mold, it is important to clarify the cause and to check exactly whether the wall lying under the tiles is populated by the fungus.

If it is a mold growing exclusively in the joints, you should completely remove the moldy mortar, spray on mold blocker and then apply waterproof grout.

Mending tile joints with new mortar

If only limited areas of the joint mortar are no longer in order, it is recommended to remove the affected areas with a joint scraper or a special milling cutter. Scrape off any residue with the utility knife, vacuum and wipe everything clean.

Buy a color-matched grout, stir as instructed and apply to the empty joints with a spatula diagonal to the joint. With a rubber squeegee, pull everything diagonally smooth again.

If the joint colors do not match completely after drying, it is possible to subsequently color all joints in the same tone. However, if you completely repair a closed area, light color differences are not important from the outset.

After repairing the tile joints: seal

Damage to tile joints is caused by the external action of water, steam, cleaners, limescale and aggressive dirt. If you would like to enjoy your repaired tile joints as long as possible, then a joint seal is recommended.

Apply the sealer to the clean, dry joints and let it harden for a few hours. Now the tile joints are sealed watertight, also detergents do not penetrate into the material to destroy it.

Renew damaged silicone joints

Silicone joints, which are often in the area around the sink, bathtub and shower tray, also remove with a Fugenkratzer, a cutter is not necessary for this. Residues can usually be removed from the substrate with baby oil or silicone remover.

Re-inject the clean and dry joints with the aid of a caulking gun. Smooth the silicone with a rounded spatula previously dipped in rinse water.
