Floorboards: design options

Planks do not necessarily always have to be laid in a boring, reliant dressing. Floorboards offer unprecedented design possibilities that can have a lasting effect on the visual effect of a room. You will find detailed information on planking in this article.

In addition to the well-known planks, there are also many other special plank forms in the trade. When it comes to plank flooring, the size of the plank boards plays a major role.

chateau plank

The largest board formats are up to 30 cm wide and can - depending on the type of wood - be made up to 16 meters in length. As a rule, these large-format plank boards are planed planks.

For particularly large plank boards, the term "castle plank" or "bower plank" has become common. But this is not a standardized name.

Castle planks are usually made to room length. There are special features in the design of the surface.

Antique look

Planks can be crafted as a plank, and have a special antique look finish. They have been artificially made to old after manufacture and offer a particularly rustic look, to which the very large planks contribute even more.

Each manufacturer has its own technology and the design is often very different from manufacturer to manufacturer, even if the same type of wood was used as the starting material.

Antique look is particularly suitable for rustic country houses, for old houses and half-timbered buildings or for old farmhouses. The prices vary from manufacturer to manufacturer partly clear.

Special woods and precious woods

Of course, a hallway can basically be made from any kind of wood. That's just a question of price in the end. Already native precious woods such as walnut or cherry wood are very expensive as a solid wood plank.

In addition, there are the particularly costly planks also made of very special woods:

  • Teak (rare, often for outdoor use)
  • mahogany
  • acacia
  • Merbau
  • Jatoba
  • Kempas

Where, due to the price of wood, a solid floorboard would be too expensive, multilayer floorboards with a correspondingly thinner wear layer are usually used. Even less hard woods can be used for a floor covering.

laying patterns

Depending on the size of the planks and the intended effect of the room, you can choose a laying along the room or across the room. A longitudinal installation emphasizes the already given proportions of the room, while a cross-laying visually shortens and widen the space.

However, the installation does not necessarily have to be done in a regular, even association. From irregular bandage to planks with falling length, the so-called English bandage or ladder patterns, there are many possibilities, just like the parquet.
Every laying pattern also influences the room effect of the plank floor. You should think about colors, color differences and laying patterns in advance. In case of doubt, the expert helps in the coordination of color, plank size and laying pattern for the intended spatial effect of the plank floor.

Color change

Of course, every solid wood plank can be changed in its color. In addition to leaching and calcification, there is also the possibility of pickling or glazing to influence the color of a solid wood floor. However, the color-changing effect of sealants, oils and waxes must also be taken into account on a case-by-case basis.
