Level planks with a liquid spatula

If old planks are no longer suitable as floor coverings, they can be covered by a new cover. Often, bumps have arisen, which can be up to several centimeters. In order to form a reliable and uniform mounting surface, it is possible to compensate with first liquid materials.

Liquid spatula for balancing

In some cases, old planks can no longer be saved as floor coverings. A costly dismantling is not absolutely necessary if the planks are free of rotting and moisture. To ensure optimum durability and safe accessibility of a new floor, the floor must be leveled.

The compensation is made with materials that are applied liquid and harden by drying. To give the floor structure enough stretch tolerance, some crafting preparations must be considered. The planning should also take into account the effects of raising the floor, for example with regard to the mobility of doors.

How to balance planks

  • Acrylic grout
  • priming
  • Leveling compound
  • Possibly reinforcement fabric
  • Screws and dowels
  • Edge strips or skirting boards made of wood or strong cardboard
  • Possible replacement planks
  • If necessary, abrasive with 150 to 200 grit
  • broom
  • pincers
  • Cordless Screwdriver
  • Glättleiste
  • Painter roller and / or brush
  • Possible grinding machine
  • Possibly drill
  • Maybe tackers

1. Prepare

Free the old planks of coarse dirt and loose parts. If you have a coat of paint, sand the planks. You must replace brash and broken planks or plank parts.

2. Re-screw

Check the strength of each board. For loose and wobbly planks that are nailed up, pull the nails and screw the planks into the screed with a drilled fixing hole with dowels.

3. Fill joints

Fill the joints of the sweeping planks with an acrylic grout. When filling the floor joints, you must ensure a complete closure of the joints and complete drying according to the manufacturer.

4. Protect expansion joints

Seal the circumferential expansion joints to the walls with wooden strips or sealing tapes made of special cardboard.

5. Apply primer

Apply a primer with a paintbrush or paint roller according to the manufacturer's instructions and observe the drying time.

6. Insert reinforcement fabric

If you are using a reinforcing or insulating fabric, staple the mats to the planks.

7. Pour the filling compound

Distribute the liquid filler evenly on the plank floor and, if necessary, smooth with a smoothing bar.

Tips & Tricks

There are special products that you can use the leveling compound and reinforcement to improve the footfall sound insulation of the floor.
