Detached walls are rarely used indoors. Usually you will find yourself in the garden or front yard.
They can fulfill very different purposes there:

building permit

Freestanding wall does not always require a building permit. This depends on the type, height and location of the wall in the garden, and may vary from municipality to municipality.
Advance information in the competent building authority is advisable in any case. There you will also receive information on whether you need to apply for an official building permit, or just have to bring the construction project to the attention of the Office.


Depending on the municipality only certain heights and lengths are allowed. In addition, certain fixed distances to buildings and property boundaries must be adhered to.
You will also receive information about which values ​​must be taken into account in your local building authority.


Each freestanding wall requires a foundation that lies in the frost-free area. The width and depth of the foundation must be appropriate to the wall weight, and the concrete used for the foundation must also be suitable. As a rule, lean concrete (C25) is used.
A gravel layer as a foundation is sufficient only for natural stone walls up to a height of at most 50 cm. But it is also better to concretise here.

Hang support

A wall designed to intercept a slope must meet certain standards. In many cases, the applicable requirements are not met here. But this can lead to very dangerous situations.
From a certain slope and height support walls are no longer allowed. Then professionally a differently designed support solution must be found. So-called slope system are not suitable for DIY, but must be professionally installed by a professional.
Here are also appropriate foundations and drainage and staggered stone layers professionally apply, as the DIN calls it. So be sure to rely on a specialist company here. DIY can be very dangerous!

Stone walls

Natural stone walls look rustic and can be made very individual by the selection of natural stones. All sorts of natural stones are used here - from sandstone to granite. Before building, you should also consider the stone weight, and then select the stone size.

ruin walls

Ruin walls have been in high demand for several years now. Both as a screen and windscreen as well as decorative bedding borders. The wall is left incomplete at the top - as in a ruin - and thus gets a very rustic look.
Best used for this are used bricks, which you can also buy cheap. Otherwise, there are also special kits in the trade.

Decoration of the wall itself

From milled into the wall mill wheel to lighting and covering with antique tiles - there are no limits to your own creativity. The combination of a matching type of stone and appropriate decorative materials can produce interesting visual effects.
