Paint desk - you have to pay attention

Even at desks sometimes the gnaw of time gnaws. With a paint job, however, you can easily make old damage disappear and give the old table again new shine. What you have to pay attention to especially when painting, and which things are important, read here.

Important points when painting

Above all, remember the following points before painting:

  • Remove old paint layers
  • Smooth surface
  • suitable paints

Remove old paint layers

In some cases, you will be able to remove any existing paint or varnish on a previously painted table. Whenever possible, try sanding. Only if paint layers can not be abraded (because they stick together, for example), you should use paint strippers. Make sure to choose a suitable agent (also for the respective wood species!)

You should do without particularly brutal remedies such as caustic soda in practice.

Smooth surface

Before you can paint, the surface must not only be free of old layers, but also be particularly smooth. Unevenness is best corrected with a suitable wooden spatula.

Suitable paints

Not all paints are suitable for painting furniture. Let yourself be advised by specialist retailers, which is the most recommendable in your case. In any case you should use as solvent-free (water-based) paints indoors as possible. Acrylic varnish is often a good choice, but it does not always have to be. The swelling of the wood through the paint often requires intermediate sanding.

Spray paint

With sprayers, painting is particularly clean and even. Especially in corners and edges they are far superior brush and role - if you know how to handle it. The devices are a good buy - you get them already from 60 - 70 EUR and they can be used for almost all painting and brushing, some even to paint the walls.

Paint desk - step by step

  • table
  • suitable paint
  • Stripper (only if absolutely necessary)
  • Wood filler (if necessary)
  • Sandpaper (different grain size, coarse, medium, fine)
  • sharpener
  • paint spray system
  • lint-free rag

1. Mending the table if necessary

Carefully repair the table where necessary. Grind the repaired areas once after the putty has hardened.

2. Sand surface

When sanding, pay special attention to corners and edges. The surface must be ground very smooth for a nice result. It is best to use 240 grit at the end. Always wipe off sanding dust after each sanding cycle.

3. Painting

Set the sprayer to the appropriate strength and speed, test it briefly on a piece of cardboard. Do not forget to cover the environment very carefully beforehand. Some paints you may need to make even more fluid with suitable thinners.

Tips & Tricks

Do not use weatherproof coatings indoors! They are only suitable for outdoor use.
