Build a desk attachment as a monitor upgrade yourself: attachment

Many sit at the desk every day complaining of more back pain, so some people who work hard every day. Cause are on the one hand a weak Rückenmuskulutar and on the other a wrong sitting position. For example, if the monitors are too deep, a hump is quickly made. Tension and back pain are the result.

The possibilities of raising a monitor or tilting it are limited, so it can be helpful to set it to monitor elevation. So you look straight out and automatically holds the back straight.

To build a desk essay yourself, it allows to adapt it exactly to the foot of the monitor, the own wishes and the optimal working height. Our construction manual shows how you can easily build such a monitor upgrade yourself. The material price can easily keep up with a purchased variant, but the result corresponds exactly to your wishes.

Required tools and material requirements

Abeitsmaterial:

  • Beech glulam 300 x 800 x 18 mm
  • Beechwood wood 150 x 100 x 18 mm 3 pieces (dimensions can be individually adjusted)
  • 9 screws 3.5 x 35 mm round head
  • Cable entry with USB hub
  • Wood oil (brush, rag, sponge)

Needed tools:

  • Table saw - alternatively miter saw, circular saw or jigsaw
  • Jig saw - alternatively band saw or scroll saw
  • Cordless drill or similar drilling tool
  • Grinder (orbital sander, eccentric sander, hand grinder)
  • Wolfcraft Undercover Jig

The selected wood species can of course be adapted to your own wishes. However, we recommend using a fairly hard wood due to the weight load from the monitors. To ensure that the selected wood species fits the desk later, the self-made desk top can also be finished with adhesive or furniture foil in any desired look.

Step 1: Cutting the feet on the table saw

Beech glulam is available in many sizes at the hardware store. Our monitor increase uses the dimension of 300 x 800 x 18 mm, which is already available and needs no further cutting. Only the three feet have to be cut. To do this, measure the required height using your own tests. Helpful here is a second person.

Just sit on your office chair while the helper raises the monitor until you think you can conveniently survey everything. Then measure the distance between the desk and monitor foot. Alternatively, you can also place books under the monitor to test out the optimum viewing angle. From the measured value, the board thickness of 18 mm is subtracted and you have determined the height of the feet.

The width of the feet can be flexible and also result from residual materials. It only needs to be noted that very wide feet take up space from the desk. On the other hand, feet that are too short cause the self-made desk attachment to tip forward quickly. However, the weight of the monitor allows relatively short feet of only 150 mm (seen in the project example).

Cutting of the feet can be done individually.

Adjust saw blade just above material height.

Tip: For hard wood types, the saw blade quickly causes burnt edges that need to be reworked. Therefore, avoid pausing the cutting motion. Slide the material slowly and evenly over the table saw.

Similarly, too much contact between saw blade and material should be avoided. Adjust the cutting depth so that the saw blade is only slightly higher than the material to be cut.

Step 2: Drawing the contour on the desk top

If you like angular contours, you can leave the monitor boost as a simple board. However, we recommend loosening the look a little bit by rounding and thus taking up less space on the desk. You are welcome to cut away so much material that the monitors just find their place.

To find a meaningful cut, slide the board under the monitor feet and align it as it pleases you. Now you can mark the required area with a pencil.

Step 3: Precise marking of the contour for sawing

The board is now returned to the workshop to determine the exact cutting edge of the contour. Find helpful items to trace the radii. These can be glasses, plates, pots, buckets or, as in the example, laundry baskets.

Once the tools are found, roughly align them with the sketching and look for any markers to transfer to the back of the board where you can re-create their marking tools. Turning over the board makes sawing easier, as you only have a crack on the board and can not get confused with the many lines of the sketching.

The transitions between the radii must not have heels.

Many tools can be used for the tear.

Step 4: Saw, grind and mill the contour

To resaw the contour, you can use a jigsaw, band saw or scroll saw. Just note that you have to cut "fluently". In other words, avoid edged cutting movements and corrections. Note that you are not cutting exactly on the mark, do not correct it jerkily, but continue to cut and gradually return the saw blade to the mark. Later, no one can see where the mark was and whether you sawed exactly on this or 5 mm next to it. However, heels in the cutting movement are clearly visible and then have to be laboriously straightened again.

After sawing, the cut edge must be extensively sanded to smooth the cut edge and remove heels. To do this, use a sanding machine with a grinding surface that is not too large, in order to be able to grind the large inner radius as well.

Depending on your taste, the upper edge of the monitor can be rounded with a radius cutter. This is softer and makes small impurities disappear at the cutting edge. Then all parts are sanded and especially the rounding requires an extensive smoothing by hand.

Step 5: Install the cable gland

We build our desk top ourselves to give the monitor a comfortable working height. Likewise, the desk should also be neater. We achieve this through additional shelves under the desk extension and through the installation of a cable gland. This can easily be designed through a hole or at the same time contain USB ports. So you can quickly connect the memory stick or use the headset.

To install the cable gland only a matching hole is needed, which can be cut with the hole saw. However, since cable glands rarely have standardized dimensions, it may be that there is no suitable hole saw and the hole must be sawed out with the jigsaw. Use a contour saw blade. This is narrower than usual saw blades, so it can also be done well around small radii.

Step 6: Connect the boards to the Undercover Jig

The easiest way to fix your feet under the monitor is the Poket Hole System. The undercover jig required for this is quite cheap (link in the tool list) and makes the work much easier.

According to the manufacturer's instructions, the Undercover Jig is set up and three holes drilled in each of the three footboards. To choose the right screw size, place two boards side by side, as shown in the picture, and check how far the screw penetrates into the vertical board. Use screws as long as possible. Make sure, however, that it does not reach the edge of the board either left or down. At least 2 mm of space should be left over.

Fast and convenient - the Undercover Jig

When screwing the footboards to the monitor bracket, it is important that they are tightened well. By screwing in the screws at an angle, the feet can otherwise slip quickly and not finish flush on the outside.

The middle board is placed across the cable gland. This will stabilize the monitor and the cables will not be visible later.

Step 7: Surface Design

Our desk tray should fit as well as possible to the desk, which is not always easy. Possible are furniture foils, wood oil or paints. We opted for a test for wood oil, as it was almost possible to adjust the wood color.

The wood oil - SKYDD from IKEA is very odorless - is applied well and well distributed. After a waiting period of about 15 minutes, excess oil must be resumed with a lint-free cloth. After 24 hours, the process is repeated at least once more.

Step 8: Build and work comfortably

After the wood has been treated and dried extensively, the monitor elevation can be set up. Now you work comfortably, have your monitors in the field of view and even gained space on the desk.
