Dishwashers are among the household appliances that must be characterized by a permanently high performance. Equipped with a complicated technique, but it often comes to defects. A common defect is that the dishwasher is leaking. We have summarized the possible causes.

Dishwashers are among the most heavily used devices

The energy efficiency class label of the European Union already shows how much dishwashers are being used. In order to determine dishwasher power and water consumption as well as other important values, an average of 280 program runs were determined per year. Water runs out of the dishwasher - many causes possible

As with other malfunctions around the dishwasher, the leakage of water can have different causes. Similar to a leaking washing machine, finding the cause quickly depends on several factors:

  • at what time during the program run does the loss of water occur?
  • are sounds connected to the water outlet and how do they sound?
  • where exactly is it especially wet in and under the dishwasher?

How and when is water moved in the dishwasher?

However, it is always important to first check the simple options and if necessary exclude them. For the dishwasher, this would mean all the components, areas and program items that have to do with moving water. So it makes sense first to know when and where the dishwasher needs water:

  • After the start of the program, residual water is pumped out of the pump sump on many machines
  • the inlet valve switches and allows water to enter via the water inlet
  • the circulating pump pumps the water into the spray arms again and again (cleaning)
  • The dirty water is pumped out of the drain pump into the drain
  • fresh water for rinsing is taken in
  • the circulating pump pumps the water into the spray arms again and again (rinsing)
  • the water pockets laterally in the walls are filled with cold water (modern equipment)
  • The dirty water is pumped out of the drain pump into the drain
  • Residual water remains in the pump sump after program termination
  • Condensation forms on the cold side walls (drying principle of modern dishwashers)

Water-bearing components around the dishwasher

Connected to this, there are several components that all carry, pump and forward water:

  • Shut-off valve (house connection)
  • inlet hose
  • Pipe and hose system including pumps in the dishwasher
  • drain hose
  • siphon

Solenoid valves, pressure cells and sensors

When water goes where it is controlled by solenoid valves. As overflow protection serve with new devices primarily sensors, but also pressure cans (similar to the air trap in the washing machine) are used. Also an aquastop system.

First checks of simple sources of error

Of course, this first checks the water supply to the solenoid valve. Then the process is controlled accordingly. In particular, if you run the dishwasher, the water will collect at a certain point on the floor. For this purpose, first the lye pump and the circulating pump are checked. There are repair kits for both pumps.

Circulation and drain pump

Because some pumps run via a magnetic coupling, others via a coil motor with drive shaft. For this purpose, the drive shaft must be sealed with Simmeringen. The water outlet is also determined according to the pumps. In addition, coarse localization (right, left, back, front) will help you disassemble the right parts of the interior trim.

A special case of water leakage: during the water intake

If the water is already running while the dishwasher is pumping in water, it will almost overflow. Accordingly, sensors and other devices pressure sockets (on the solenoid valve for the water inlet) to check. In rare cases, it can happen that the pressure cans "accidentally" trigger. Lateral water loss at the water pockets

Side water leakage may also indicate a defect in the water bags. Since these water bags are available on both sides, water can leak on the right and left. In addition, all connections pipes and hoses that are inserted or secured with clamps) must be checked for leaks.

Tips & Tricks

Many obvious defects are actually due only to operator error or maintenance backlog. In numerous guidebook articles we describe the most different defects exactly - for example, if the dishwasher does not wash cleanly.

The water pockets represent the drying principle of a dishwasher. The entire interior has almost identical warm temperatures. Accordingly, the steam would also condense on the dishes. So there must be a much cooler region where the steam condenses before. For this purpose, cold water is introduced into the water pockets after rinsing. Thus, the inner walls are correspondingly colder than the rest of the machine and the steam condenses here and runs into the sump.
