Door falls by itself

Whenever an open door recovers itself, the cause is usually found in the assembly and adjustment of the hinges. In some cases, an external building circumstances such as crooked masonry or an obliquely mounted door frame may be the reason. In rare cases, the uneven weight distribution in the door leaf is crucial.

From the inside to the outside

If a door falls by itself, the exclusion technique should be used to investigate the cause. Recommended is the path from the inside out. First, the door hinges must be checked in installation depth and setting. If the settling can not be remedied by these corrections, the position of the frame must be checked before tracing down a slope in the masonry and building.

In addition to adjusting the door hinges, some "tricks" can help. Since even deviations of less than one millimeter can cause the door to move, increasing the frictional resistance can promise success. Depending on the available space and the design of the door hinges, braking components can be placed around the pivot pin.

So make sure that your door falls by itself

1. Turn the door hinge anchor
For simple wooden doors with a wooden frame, the door hinge anchors are often screwed in. The number of revolutions results in their depth and position. Turn the upper anchor lower or lower anchor out. The center of gravity of the door leaf changes as a result.
2. Adjust adjusting screws
On hinges with adjusting screws, you can both change the height of each individual band and also influence the horizontal spacing or spread of the door hinge mechanism. Try different combinations and positions of the screws.
3. Increase frictional resistance
Known as not really artisanal professional, but gladly used by experienced practitioners are some methods that increase the frictional resistance. After unhooking the door, you can put so-called Schnorr disks over the pivot pins. These discs have an uneven surface and thus prevent the sliding movement of the door.
4. Check the frame
Check the vertical frame position with a solder. If the deviation is more than two percent, it can no longer be compensated with settings.
5. Change the door stop
With leaning walls or gradients in the building, "turning around" the door opening direction can help and avoid a complete new installation with a frame.

Tips & Tricks

The principle of increasing the frictional resistance is also followed by inserted emery paper or small leather flaps instead of the Schnorr discs.
