Change a front door lock

The reasons to change a front door lock are versatile. Nevertheless, it is not an everyday job, which is why not all savvy DIYers are immediately familiar with it. However, with the right knowledge about door locks and good preparation, this is no longer a hassle. Afterwards, you will receive useful information and instructions for changing from a front door lock.

The front door lock, a special door lock

Door locks in the interior of apartments and houses are subject to significantly higher security requirements for door locks. Thus, the selection of the candidate types of locks for house doors is relatively small. Only a few locking cylinder formats were able to prevail due to the strict specifications.

  • pin locks
  • Mortise locks as an extension of mortise locks
  • cylinder locks

The distinction of pure cylinder locks in particular to conventional pin locks is rather difficult, since cylinder locks can have a pen filling. Thus, these two types of locks are the most used door locks in the German-speaking area.

Materials to use

When choosing door locks, you can also choose between different materials.

  • Non-ferrous alloys such as brass
  • Stainless steel locks (high quality and durable)

Special front door locks

Pen locks and mortise locks are also often made as security locks. Then, these locks or keys receive a special key ID, comparable to an individual badge for each different key or lock.

Instructions for changing from a front door lock

  • Door lock
  • possibly rust remover or creep oil
  • Caliper or special angle ruler with measuring scale
  • mostly a Phillips screwdriver
  • maybe a small hammer
  • possibly a small punch (or screwdriver with a continuous metal shaft)
  • a key to the old castle

1. Preparatory work

Before you swap out the front door lock and remove it, you should take the dimensions of the old lock cylinder. In particular, you need the length of the cylinder in the side view. In addition, it may be useful to spray the rust remover into the lock the day before so that it can work on the fixing screw. Explicit door locks are increasingly exposed to the weather and tend over the years to oxidation.

2. Construction of the front door lock

Door locks are usually on both sides, so unlockable from inside and outside. This is then a double profile lock. The side view shows a hole with a fine thread in the lower part of the lock. Here, the door lock is fixed with a correspondingly long screw from the front side of the door leaf.

3. Determine necessary dimensions

a) measuring the lock cylinder
Starting from the center of this bore, the cylinder does not have to be the same length inside out. A standard dimension would be I30 / A30 (inside 30 mm, outside 30 mm) or I35 / A30, that is different. Accordingly, it is therefore not sufficient to determine only the entire length of the lock cylinder.

Instead, starting from the fixing screw on the door leaf (you do not necessarily have to remove the front door lock at this time), you must take the dimension in or out.

b) Any measurements including the door fittings
Another deviation may exist if the old door lock is slightly recessed in the fitting or if the door fittings are to be renewed. If you want the door lock cylinder to be flush with the fittings, you must also take the dimension to the outside of the fittings starting from the fixing screw.

Now that you have taken all the measurements, you can select door locks in specialist shops that meet your criteria.

4. Remove the front door lock

a) Loosen the fixing screw
With the screwdriver (mostly cross recess) you turn the fixing nut from the front side of the door leaf. For very old door locks, which have been exposed to the weather for a long time, this screw can be downright festgeracken (solid rusted). In particular, when locking cylinder thread and screw are different non-ferrous metals.

b) Fix typical door lock removal problems
If this is the case despite a pre-treatment with rust remover, preferably insert the exactly fitting Phillips screwdriver into the head of the screw and hit with a hammer on the handle end of the screwdriver. Use only suitable screwdrivers with a continuous shank or a metal reinforcement at the end of the handle. The blows loosen the screw better from the lock thread.

c) Take out the front door lock
Now insert the key into the door lock and turn it approximately at 1 o'clock or 11 o'clock. In the door lock is the driver, who has the task of a key bit. He pushes the lock on or off. However, so that only authorized persons can change a lock, the driver is not in flight with the door lock when the key is removed in order to protect it against unwanted removal.

Now turn the key to the specified position (depending on whether you insert the key from the inside or outside), the driver makes an escape with the rest of the lock and can be easily pulled out. Maybe the castle but has a little tilted or seized. With jerky or subtle beats with a small hammer you can loosen the lock cylinder and remove it to replace it immediately.

Tips & Tricks

Straight double profile locks, as they are primarily used as a door lock, can be equipped with additional features. This includes a security function that can close and open a key even with an internal transverse key. For house doors, this feature is not common, because even prone.
