Move the door into a new door opening

Who wants to move a door, must obtain a reliable static opinion of a specialist. A new door position influences the overall statics of the wall and the building. The lay opinion that putting in non-load-bearing walls is not a problem is wrong. Architects, structural engineers and masons can assess the construction costs correctly.

Concrete fall is common

If, for example, a door is to be relocated to a newly acquired old building, observing the static is relevant to safety and extends the service life of the door. Due to the distributive dissipation of the masonry weight, loose stones do not exert any pressure on the door frame if they sink.

In principle, an existing lintel can be installed over the new door opening. The dimensions of today's concrete lintels are standardized and must protrude laterally at least 25 centimeters into the masonry.

To offset less than the door width

If the door is offset by one measure below its existing overall width, a partial wall breakthrough must be made, which must be walled up appropriately after opening and widening the door opening on the opposite side.

Depending on the project, the door opening can be reduced or enlarged as the door is moved. Each door opening must be closed by a door or masonry if no open passage is to be made. The door opening itself can be created in drywall or mortar masonry.

Break from top to bottom

When a door is moved, the camber must first be set and concreted in place. Therefore, the first wall opening is above the later door position. The corresponding support depth on both sides next to the later door opening must be considered.

The work of moving a door is always carried out from top to bottom. To after prying the wall openings for the lintel height adjustments by inserting concrete slabs.

This is how you move a door

  • mortar
  • caulking tool

1. pry out the fall

Place your caulking tool as perpendicular as possible to the masonry and break through the rectangular recess for the lintel.

2. Install the lintel

Insert the lintel and close the side and top cavities with mortar and, if necessary, with fillers or concrete slabs.

3. Press out the door opening from top to bottom

4. Straighten the soffit

5. Assemble the door frame

6. Insert the door frame and lather
