Drawer under the oven - that's what it's for

Many users are happy about the practical drawer under the oven. Here everything can be kept dry and relatively clean. Baking trays, grill grates and casserole dishes find their place under the oven here. Some housewives even keep the cookbooks and recipes under the oven. This is not just waste, but it can also be dangerous.

Operating instructions for the oven

Whether the drawer under the oven is suitable as a repository depends on the manufacturer. In many fitted kitchens, the oven is installed separately. In these cases, a drawer under the oven is usually a pure storage space. Nevertheless, it is worth taking a look in the manufacturer's manual.

Warming drawer

For most normal stoves with ovens, the operating instructions refer to the drawer under the oven. This is intended to warm dishes or to keep food moderately warm. However, the drawer usually has no adjustment options, how warm the interior is actually.

For keeping food warm, the drawer is therefore only suitable if the oven is in operation long enough and has been set at a high level. But this feature is better for the plates. If some plates are always kept in the drawer, you will have nice warm plates when the food comes out of the oven.

Hazards if used incorrectly

If flammable things such as matches and / or the loose recipe collection are stored under the oven, this can be a fire-threatening affair. If the oven is in operation longer, for example for the big Christmas goose, the heat in the drawer could rise too much. The warm air can hardly escape from the drawer and this beautiful dry place becomes a fire hazard. Therefore, under no circumstances should you keep matches in the drawer under the oven.

Tips & Tricks

Always read the operating instructions when you get a new oven. There are quite surprising things that many users do not even know. If the instruction manual is already missing, the material from which the drawer was made, can be a good indication. If the drawer is made of metal, you should not store flammable things in it - certainly no matches.
